Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (born May 2, 1973 in Cologne) is a German director and screenwriter.
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck grew up in New York and West Berlin. He studied Russian in St. Petersburg, and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University. In 1996, he worked as an intern for Richard Attenborough on In Love and War before going on to study at the prestigious Directing Class of the Munich Film Academy in Munich, Germany, alma mater of directors as diverse as Wim Wenders and Roland Emmerich.
His feature film Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) won the German Film Award (Deutscher Filmpreis) for Best Film in 2006 and set a record for receiving 7 awards, the highest number ever for a single film, among them writing and directing statuettes for Donnersmarck himself.
