Idris Elba (born September 6, 1972) is an English television, theatre and film actor who has starred in both British and American productions. Idris is also a DJ under the moniker DJ Big Driis / Big Driis the Londoner, and a hip-hop soul recording artist. He's the only child of a Sierra Leone father and a Ghanian mother. Idris was born and raised in Hackney, London, England. He is single, with one daughter.
Idris started acting in secondary school with encouragement from his drama teacher, on whom he also had a crush.
He has a large female fan following and thus appeared on the cover of Essence's "Hot Hollywood Men" issue, April 2004 and again in Essence's November 2005 "10 Hottest Men on the Planet" issue.
Elba is perhaps best known for playing Stringer Bell, one of the major characters in the HBO drama series "The Wire". In the first season, the character is second in command to a major Baltimore drug dealer, Avon Barksdale (played by Wood Harris). In the second season, Barksdale is arrested and Bell steps up to assume temporary control of the drug trade. In the third season, the Barksdale clan is brought down via the West Baltimore wire taps culminating in the death of Elba's character, Stringer Bell.
He recorded "Johnny Was" for Hevlar Records in 2006.
