Stephen Root (born November 17, 1951 in Sarasota, Florida) is an American comedic actor.
He played Jimmy James on NBC's NewsRadio and provides the voices of Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill. Recently, he had a recurring role on the final two seasons of The West Wing as Republican campaign consultant Bob Mayer. His most recognizable film role to date was as the mumbling, quirky Milton Waddams in Mike Judge's 1999 cult comedy Office Space. Other films include RoboCop 3, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghost, Ice Age, Finding Nemo, The Ladykillers, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Bicentennial Man, Jersey Girl, Just Friends, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Root portrayed NASA flight director Chris Kraft in the miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. He is the voice of Commander Chode on the Sci Fi Channel's Tripping the Rift, as well as the voice of Homebase of The X's. Root made an appearance as the Klingon Captain K'Vada in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Unification." Root recently played Richard A. Clarke in "The Path to 9/11."
