The winner of this year's RT Awards is The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers! With 184 reviews (as of this writing) and 179 of them Fresh, The Two Towers stands as the best-reviewed movie of 2002. This shouldn't be too surprising, since most critics have said the movie leaves them wanting more. Likewise, last year's RT Award for Best Film went to the first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring. Will The Return of the King be similarly well-received? Wait until next year to find out.
The second and third spots belong to Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can -- two very different movies, but both confirming Steven Spielberg's mastery of the craft. Spider-Man, the real surprise on this list, comes in fourth. Superhero movies are usually overblown action set pieces, but to the filmmakers' credit, the more human elements of character development and drama are presented with equal care. Rounding out the top five is Insomnia, the remake of the (some say superior) 1997 Norwegian movie of the same name. Robin Williams erases his syrupy Patch Adams persona with a creepy and effective performance opposite Al Pacino.
