Simpsons Movie Actually Underway? Exxxccelllent...
by Scott Weinberg | June 07, 2005
Discuss Article
Thanks to ComingSoon.net for sharing a tidbit that Nancy ("Bart Simpson") Cartwright divulged while on BBC Radio: "You know what? We've just done the table read for the 'Simpsons' movie so although we've been promoting that we're going to do it, now we're actually doing it and are in production ... I don't know the name of it and I can't go into details about it and we'll just have to see how it goes, but I think it's going to be great and the fans are going to dig it."

So while that's some fairly concrete confirmation that the "Simpsons Movie" is finally underway, we shouldn't get too excited just yet; it'll take at least two full years before this flick can hit the screens. Obviously we'll be bringing you more news on this project as soon as it becomes available.

They shouldn't be making a movie if they can't even garner one laugh in 23 minutes these days. The simpsons hasn't been funny for about 5 years. Unless they bring back some of the writers from seasons 3-9, this will be terrible.

don't blame the writers alone
The writers do suck, that's a fact, but the show also needs a great show runner at the helm. The Simpsons was at its best when it explored minor characters (and exploited them for laughs) if David Mirkin comes back, then the quality would improve greatly with that alone.

am I devoted fan of the "Simpsons" and can't wait for it to come out. Two years isn't that long..I mean "Revenge of the Sith" is out and I thought that day would never come.

Wonder what a plot of a Simpsons feature film would be, hopefully it is someting not to clitche like a trip to Disneyland or the Simpsons go to Hollywood or something whack like that. I would like to see a full-fledged Simpsons politcal satire, our current political state is dire fellas and if people keep ignoring it and going on with there lives, eventually they will going nothing to go on with.

It all depends on the writer, you can`t go wrong with Ian Maxtone Graham, Al Jean or John Swartzwelder episodes, specially Swatzwelder`s. If the writer is good then the episode is good, it is that simple. And it is undeniable that this show has provided some of the best moments EVER on TV, that episode when Homer buys a gun, that one that involves a trillion dolla bill, the infamous ''tomaco'' episode or that chapter when he brings civilization to the natives. Let's be objetive.

It's about time...
If anything, I think the Simpsons has improved in that it is now focusing on the more intellectual side of humor (so I could understand if all you kids out there don't find it as funny anymore) However, all good things come to an end, and why not go out with a bang? (or in this case, what I expect to be, an awesome movie!)

First Rotten Tomatoes Post Ever
This is my first post ever on this site, yet I have used it for about 4 years. It took the Simpsons movie news to crack me.

It will only be good if they focus on the cultural capital humor that they have made so famous. I don't know about writers, directors, etc. All I know is that while The Simpsons doesn't make sense half the time, it is always hysterical. Rewatching the first seasons is actually painful sometimes, because they weren't always funny. If the movie involves Homer acting stupid in some way for 99 % of the movie, it will be gold. The plot will probably have somethiong to do with Sideshow Bob, because its the best running plot through the whole series.

I frankly would like to see the fabled Itchy and Scratchy Movie be actually made into a movie.

I think the Simpsons has been generally getting better over time. I can't bear to watch the really early episodes, because everyone sounds wrong and the humour isn't particularly good. I'll admit some recent (ie made in the last two years or so) episodes have been rather lackluster, but the series picked up again after a few uninteresting episodes. Which is good; I was getting worried it would never become really funny again. Not sure if it would translate into a movie, though... as long as they keep the original writers, it should work. I always get the feeling there's lots of funny stuff they have to cut out of the TV episodes, so it'll be interesting to see what the writers do when they're set free from the tyranny of 30-minute time slots. Give it your best shot, guys! I'll paint a target on my funnybone for ya.

If you haven't noticed the talk, it's that the best episodes aren't the first few seasons - they're vintage, but not uproariously funny. It's that streak that starts between seasons 3 and 4 that really take things to a new level.

Ironically, one of the many memorable moments - and perhaps what we have to blame for the recent malaise in the series - was the cameo of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. While not neccessarily funny, the episode was remembered, as was the cartoon characters in their underwear. But because this episode was successful, along with a very funny episode with Mel Gibson in one of the later seasons, it seems that we can't go 23 minutes without a shameless cameo. 50-Cent, Ray Romano, and Kid Rock - with the late Joe C - all come to mind. The marketing crew in the Simpsons' camp, no longer influenced by the undeniable brilliance of Matt Groening, must have assumed that these cameos, and the zany madcap situations they created and supported, must be able to carry episodes. Many of the key one-liners and character conflicts of earlier seasons has vanished, replaced by cheaper writing substituted by character cliches and inside jokes that only the writing staff knows.

The movie is a few years too late, unless we're greeted with the beautiful news that Groening is on board - which I wouldn't entirely rule out. He's made movie-quality episodes before: "Who Killed Mr. Burns", with a little more development, could very well have filled a third entire episode. And as another poster noted, Sideshow Bob makes for some of the best episodes in history - except for his latest appearance, in the Mardi Gras/Frank Grimes Jr. episode. See what I mean about 'zany, madcap situations'?

But personally, if the movie brings an end to the series, I think it'll be the only way the series can rest with any dignity.

the Simpsons is so embedded into our popular cuture it is sick. they have been on for so long and everyone watches or has seen atleast one EP. i can't believe what I am reading. yes the series has been on a down fall but this last season was great. i can't help to say but after 13 or so many series the show may run a little short on jokes. I can't wait for the movie, its about goddamn time. and I hope the rest of you slack jaw idiots will see how great of a show the simpsons really is...

A Cautious Woo-Hoo!
A SIMPSONS MOVIE? Fans have been waiting. My guess is that it will generate similar buzz to the ITCHY AND SCRATCHY MOVIE from season 4. I hope that it won't distract from the quality of the actual show. Animation is a tedious and long process, and making a movie on top of twenty-two episodes might require more creativity than the writers and animators can handle.

However, this staff has a lot integirty and have been putting this off quite a bit. So, if they feel ready to move forward, they must have the right ideas, jokes, and scope in mind.

SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT took full advantage of being on the big screen. They gave it an epic plot, touched on poignant social issues, and embraced the raunchiness that they were prevented from on TV. SIMPSONS needs to do the same thing. Let's face it, it hasn't been a family show for some time. It's original fanbase (me included) are now in their early twenties (even older). I'm not saying that it should be needlessly raunchy or disstasteful, but they shouldn't worry about an occasional swear word being thrown in. Let the kids have Spongebob, let us Generation Yers have this. Please!

The show has gotten very liberal in the last few years! Good! This should have a South Parkesque plot, attacking some sociopolitical issue. That's when the Simpsons are sharpest. Another commenter on this site said that Sideshow Bob should intregal. I couldn't agree more. This season Flanders seems to be getting less and less sympathetic. At one time the show's selfless prince and perfect neighbor has become a harbinger of the Christian Right. Making PASSIONesque films, demeaning Catholics, and showing no respect for non-Christian religions. He even flatout admitted to homophobia and pro-life leanings. He and Bob would make a great pair of villians working together. If you think I'm being too "Anti-Republican", I suggest giving John McCain and Arnold Schwarzenegger voice roles on the side of the good guys, cause I have no beef with moderates.

The show itself hasn't been very good lately. I used to watch the older shows religiously, but I turned on the new episodes recently and didn't laugh at one thing.

I'll pass.

It's Family Guy and Futurama for me.

Ever since around season 12 the Simpsons has been mediocre at best, and downright painful to sit through at its worst. If they can somehow make a great Simpsons film at this point, which I'm doubtful, then at least the series may be able to go out on somewhat of a high note. But, really I think they should have let the series die gracefully a few years back. I don't blame them, really. I mean, if I were them, I'd probably feed at the teat of the cash cow for as long as possible as well.

First off i was watching the simpsons when it was only on one night a week, second theres only a matter off time before it losses its chemistry and "coolness" simpsons have been providing people with laughter for a better part of a decade. I think people have been writing off the simpsons ever since family guy came back. Not every new episode has been bad what about the one when homer goes to canada to get drugs for the town. When flanders sees his brother from another mother i laughed my ass off. The episode when Bart goes to the hip hop show and starts rapping. Everyone stop hating on the simpsons, definately the best cartoon show made.
