Mild-mannered... computer consultant Norman Neale has two great loves in this cruel world: Comic books and his office's effervescent main receptionist, Andrea Hicks. Norman spends his days dreaming of Andrea from the isolation of his cubicle and his nights dreaming of fighting crime from the solitude of his apartment. Then one fateful day... Norman discovers that a fellow co-worker, Victor Ventura, a swaggering, pretty-boy salesman, has slight telekinetic abilities beyond his understanding. After discussing his mind-blowing discovery with his only friend Chuck, a know-it-all comic book store owner, Norman comes to the outlandish conclusion that he should train Victor to become a real-life superhero by helping him refine and expand his extraordinary ability. Reviews
In a perfect antidote to this summer's pretentious, superhero extravaganzas, Sidekick is a sweet, indie spoof of the genre. ... It's consistently cute.
A twisted superhero story that has reportedly been purchased for a big-budget Hollywood remake, though this indie version is certainly good enough for multiplexes.
just as captivating as anything that opens with the Marvel comic's scrawl. This thing has real characters, real emotion, and mostly, real laughs.
Has more to say about being a hero than most big movie productions, although having even a tiny bit of one of those blockbuster's budgets would have helped.
You can easily tell that the budget was threadbare. In fact, the catering for the crew probably consisted of tap water and peanut-and-jelly sandwiches.
Sidekick isn't a comedy so much as it is a twist on the genre. It's a solid little film, and I'll be curious to see what these filmmakers do next.
...a lot of fun to watch, and I hope to see those involved continue to grow.
...a far more accomplished and flat-out entertaining piece of work than some of its similarly-themed Hollywood brethren.
Even though I have read a comic or two in my life, it's not just for us nerds....It's a universal story. Honest.
