Directed By...Sir Paul Verhoeven?
by Jen Yamato | April 30, 2007
Discuss Article
Paul Verhoeven, the Dutch director who brought us such films as "Basic Instinct," "Starship Troopers," and "Showgirls," has reportedly been knighted in his native Netherlands.

Twitch reports that Verhoeven, one of the most visible Dutch filmmakers in the movie biz, received the honor in a recent medal ceremony under the Order of the Dutch Lion; such titles are usually given by the Royal Family for achievements in sports and the arts.

Verhoeven's knighthood comes as his most recent film, "Black Book" ("Zwartboek"), caps its worldwide theatrical run in July. The two and a half hour-long WWII Dutch resistance melodrama has proven to be mildly divisive among critics (at 76 percent on the Tomatometer, even some proponents of the film admit "Black Book" is often crass and pulpy) but has garnered international film festival accolades and was the Netherlands' submission for Best Foreign Oscar last year. The film also grossed $9.8 million at the Dutch box office, leading all other domestic productions in returns.

Most American moviegoers know Verhoeven for his earlier works in Hollywood, many of which sealed his directorial signature for over the top sex, action, and graphic content (see "Flesh + Blood," "RoboCop," "Total Recall," "Basic Instinct," "Showgirls," "Starship Troopers," and "Hollow Man").

HE NEEDS THERAPY.
This Paul Verhuven (whatever the surname is...) needs THERAPY in a very immediate way, to take control over his crazed obsession with sex and sick voilence.
The fact that his native nether-people have chose to knight him with whatever, kinda says that maybe that entire country shoud be attending that therapy session.

So does Prez Bush.

He's obsessed with killing his own people.

Robocop is one of the finest movies of the 80s
Verhoeven is a genius. This honour bestowed upon him is well deserved.

Why was "Showgirls" one of the first three movies you brought up Jen? Robocop should have been there instead. I guess I'm overreacting.

VERHUVEN'S NEXT FILM.
In Paul Verhuven's upcoming film you see a VAGINA.
---"So what?"---

No, no, you don't get it. You see ONLY the vagina for 90 minutes.
The camera never climbs up, to show the face, the vagina is attached to.
You just see the Vagina. For 90 minutes. Only that.

That's right!! You guessed right!!
"SHOWGIRLS--- PART 2: THE GYNECOLOGIST VERSION"
directed by SIR Paul Verhuven. Yeah... wow....

Verhoeven has done some amazing stuff, as far as his obsession with sex, If I had hot ass ladies all around I'd getem to nude up too!
He's frickin great and Robocop is awsome.
As far as his country needing therapy?
Netherlands is a great country, unlike some you fricking moron I think per capita the US has that market completly cornered!
So thank the lord, pass the ammo and fuck off.

Hey wilkiedriver -- didn't omit RoboCop for any reason from that intro...just picked three that represented some variety in his better known filmography...not that you can really define him with any three of his films!

I'm Dutch, and I think Paul Verhoeven (very hard, spelling someone's name right when it's at the top of the article) is a so-so filmmaker in the general scheme of things, but he has done a lot for the Dutch film industry. In this regard this honor is well-deserved. Also, don't make too much of it. Around this time of year (April 30th is the Queen's birthday), some 3,000 people receive a variety of royal honors. The article is misleading; certainly there are some artists and sports people among them, but the vast majority of these honors are bestowed on people who have made themselved useful to society. Apart from ex-mayors and politicians, most of the honors go to John Does who have worked their entire life in universities, schools, houses for the elderly, neighborhood centres or non-profit organisations.

As for your suggestion regarding therapy, all it shows is that you yourself need some serious anti-racism therapy.
