Trailer Bulletin: The Happening
Prepare for the first wave of "I already guessed the big twist" comments...
M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening won't reach theaters until June 13, but 20th Century Fox has released its first teaser -- and it's just a click away!
Okay, okay. So any project that the phrases "follow-up to Lady in the Water" and "Mark Wahlberg plays a high school science teacher" apply to might not inspire tons of optimism. We totally understand. But still, it's M. Night Shyamalan, folks! Remember how good The Sixth Sense was?
Remember?
Anyway. Here's the synopsis for The Happening, followed by the clip. What do you think?
M. Night Shyamalan directs this thriller about a father (Mark Walhberg) who tries to escape with his family after an apocalyptic event. "The Happening" costars Zooey Deschanel and John Leguizamo.

smi1ey writes: on Feb 05 2008 07:01 AM video doesn't work anymore. i'm really hoping shyamalan can pick himself back up with a new GOOD movie that intrigues like the sixth sense did. although i honestly think people were way to harsh in reviewing his proceeding movies, i can definitely say he hasn't returned to the original quality in any of his latest attempts. ffamilyguy writes: on Feb 05 2008 07:23 AM I love how it doesn't say, "from the writer and director of 'Lady in the Water'. Hahahhahah! Seems to me like M.Night could have another great movie on his hands, only if he makes it exciting and interesting like Signs. Sixth Sense was his best movie...definitley a great thriller. Unbreakable was pretty good, but not near as good. Signs was more intense then Sixth Sense, I thought. Then the Village came out. It was pretty good until the lame ending. Then Lady in the Water....WOOOOOOOO...I swear, M.Night must have been snortin' crack when he made it, because it was lame. Probably one of the hugest dissapointments since Battlefield Earth, IMO. The preview looks very interesting, I just hope it has some good action in it like Signs did, because if it is as slow as Unbreakable or Village, it is going to BOMB! (Reply to this) |

Weicher writes: on Feb 05 2008 07:42 AM M Night Shyamalan is one of these directors that, despite having a very personal style and vision of the world, make blockbusters (I think it's the only case alongside Spielberg, Burton and Nolan). Everyone is thrashing his latest films. Well, I thought Lady in the Water was a bad movie. Bad writing, bad editing, average acting at best. Signs, as much as it is appreciated around here, it seems, was also a mediocre movie, in my opinion. But The village, Unbreakable and The sixth sense are very good films, in my opinion (I honestly think that the second one is the best super-hero movie ever made). So... this looks nice, but, again, so did Lady in the water. Let's wait and see, but I'll definitely be there. (Reply to this) |

kubla writes: on Feb 05 2008 07:43 AM the best thing i can say about shyamalan is that he never makes anything "conventional". i thought lady in the water was a terrible failure too, but i do appreciate that he tries to put his own spin on certain genres or tries to invent new ones. (obviously, they don't all work out.. like lady and unbreakable. seriously, who makes a superhero movie without any action???) he needs to cut down on the indulgent camera work - frustrating camera angles, lingering too long in one place, etc. Plus, a lot of his movies are just terribly paced. They are so quiet and slow moving... again, "indulgent" is the word that comes to mind. I've read a lot of his interviews, and it just seems like he doesnt give a crap what anyone thinks. i appreciate that he has the moxy of a visionary, but he needs a good editor and needs to learn from his mistakes. i loved signs and sixth sense... i think m.night is incredibly gifted, and for the sake of those films, i will give this movie a shot. Weicher writes: on Feb 05 2008 07:50 AM In reply to this comment (#1554808) Well, some of the best super-hero comic-books I remember do not have any action. And "Unbreakable" has an amazing set piece (the climax in the film), which is very intense and full of action (well, in the weird, Shyamalan way). (Reply to this) |

Don't Tase Me Bro writes: on Feb 05 2008 08:11 AM Looking for M. Night Shamalama-ding-dong (sp?) to stop making self-aggrandizing 'much ado about nothing' films with, in proportion to his ever-expanding ego, a expanded cameo role for himself. At least Hitchcock's cameo's were subtle...M.Night beats you over the head with 'Hey EVERYONE! Not only do I have to have my NAME appear in bigger font size than the title of my films...I've taken to giving myself bigger roles in the films as well!' (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Feb 05 2008 08:18 AM Shamalama puts himself in movies because its "hitchcock" esque. every guy that does it WANTS to be like, or pay homage to Hitch. he's no hitch... ] to me...he's had one good movie. i stopped being pumped to see his flicks after the village. seeing his flicks are like bedding a chic that looks great in a hot outfit...but after everything is done and you've seen the whole package, you realize it wasn't anything special, and you're left disappointed. dahluzz writes: on Feb 05 2008 08:53 AM yeah, shamapalon was interviewed about 'lady in the water' right before it came out and asked 'do you think audiences will like the movie.' his answer 'it doesn't matter.' exactly, because he only made the movie for himself (said it was for his kids, but i'm sure they didn't care). c'mon, the guy wrote himself the part of a writer who's writings basically save the world. how much more egotistical can you get? disney refused to release the film in the state he wanted it, so he had to go to some other studio to get the thing out, and then it tanked miserably. wahlberg has been taking fairly smart roles of late, so that instills a bit of confidence, but some of these scenes look exactly like that 'invasion of the body snatchers' remake that no one saw last year. SHAM-a-lot doesn't get the benefit of the doubt anymore (so much for being the next spielberg), but that may leave the door open for a pleasant surprise. time to earn back your cred, buddy. jokerboy1991 writes: on Feb 05 2008 08:54 AM I actually like M.Night, I thought SIGNS and the six senxe were great, Unbreakable was pretty good, but the VILLAGE and LADY IN THE WATER were mediocre. I think this will be his come back, I hear its gonna be R and it looks like it will be. I also like MARKY MARK (Reply to this) |

Exode writes: on Feb 05 2008 09:04 AM Looks like another let down, someone in his position can't afford the mysterious vibe to draw interest, if his talent hasn't completely saturated he needs a film with a great idea and to be up front with it from the beginning, otherwise you'll just have the village. krycek77 writes: on Feb 05 2008 09:13 AM Typical M. Night Shyamalan creepiness. Not to say that I mind the familiarity; I enjoy (some of) his movies. Never saw Lady in the Water, is it worth it? I hated the Village. (Reply to this) |

nathanpoitras writes: on Feb 05 2008 09:23 AM Looks good, I think overall that Shyamalan is too talented a guy to make 2 duds in a row. I actually didn't mind the Village, kept me on edge for the most part. (Reply to this) |
