Hot on the heels of its massive global UK premiere earlier this year, the keenly anticipated climate-change drama, The Age of Stupid, will have its national, ‘green-friendly’ Australian premiere at Sydney Theatre on the evening of Wednesday, 19 August. In support of the film’s message, Sydney Theatre will be powered by 100% renewable energy for the occasion.

As with the UK event, which was attended by a host of British celebrities, including fashion designer Vivienne Westwood who made world headlines with her pert arrival by bicycle, the Australian spectacular, which will be helmed by Australian cinema giant, Hoyts, will be a national affair with The Age of Stupid screening simultaneously in 40+ cinemas around the country. ‘Green carpet’ arrivals, led by the film’s star, acclaimed British actor Pete Postelthwaite and director Franny Armstrong, will be beamed via live satellite to all participating venues, as will the post-screening Q&A led by Postlethwaite, Armstrong and a host of high-profile Australians equally committed to halting global warming. Staging the event in this manner will also enable thousands of Australians to attend the national premiere at their local cinema, thus saving on the CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions that result when people need to travel a great distance to one central location.

Following the 19 August premiere, Hoyts will screen The Age of Stupid for an exclusive, weeklong season at selected cinemas across Australia.

Described by international media and politicians alike as ‘essential viewing to anyone who cares about the survival of our planet’ The Age of Stupid stars Postlethewaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching ‘archival’ footage from 2008 and asking, ‘why didn’t we stop climate change whilst we still had the chance?’ In the crucial lead-up to December’s UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen, where the successor to the Kyoto treaty will be decided, this is a question that hopefully future generations will never be forced to ask.

A trailblazer in numerous ways, The Age of Stupid was bankrolled by a unique crowd-funding scheme and enjoyed the highest screen average in its opening week in the UK, beating films such as SLUMDOG MILLIONARE and DUPLICITY at the notoriously competitive UK box office.
