A Second "Day" With the Always-Hungry "Dead"
by Scott Weinberg | May 25, 2005
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
It happened at "Night," and it happened again during "Dawn," so is anyone out there actually surprised that George Romero's "Day of the Dead" is about to go through the remake machine? According to Variety, it's going to happen sooner than later. Millennium Films, along with Taurus Entertainment, will be bringing an all-new "Day of the Dead" to the big screen.

The third chapter in Romero's zombie saga detailed the stress levels of a few remaining soldiers and citizens who hole up in a military bunker after the planet is overrun by the ravenous undead. The original "Night of the Living Dead" was remade by splat-master Tom Savini in 1990, while "Dawn of the Dead" earned a rather profitable remake in 2004. And, of course, Mr. Romero also has his fourth zombie tale, "Land of the Dead," ready for a June 24th release.

The original DoTD wasn't such a bad movie, just a little rushed at the end. If the remake is as good as the Dawn remake it should be good. I hope they use the same team as well.

The original was a major disappointment and deserved better treatment. Hopefully, it'll get the same infusion as "Dawn" did, only more intelligent. I can't wait to see how Bub turns out!

WHY!?!?!?!?! The Dawn remake was fucking horrible. Day is a great film (not as great as the original Dawn, but great nontheless)....a claustrophobic tension filled horror film counterpart to the splatter-satire of the classic (original) Dawn.

I hate hollywood's bastardization of film in an attempt to leech money out of misguided 15 year Hot topic shoppers who don't know good horror at all.

Why not remake it? Romero himself even bastardized his own Night of the Living Dead with a substandard remake that makes the Dawn Remake look like the greatest film of all time. Sure, they could spend their time making an original and intelligent script that explores new avenues and blows people's minds, but why bother?

Oh come on, how can you compare the Tom Savini, 1990 remake to the Dawn remake from last year? At least Tom's remake was true to the core story of Dawn and maintained the racial devision between some of the characters, even if it wasn't as overt. And the only thing that Romero did for the remake was hand pick Savini as the director.

Now, Day is by far the goriest of the original Dead series, it makes the remake of Dawn look like a trip through Disney Land so why remake it when (In the Politically Correct world we live in) the censors will have it cut back to the point that its just a bunch of people in a cave listening to zombies moan? Why can't film makers get off their butts and actually just put together a new and original horror piece instead of trying to reinvent the classics? Has the talent pool in Hollywood really dwindled that much.....wait, don't answer that.

After Land of the Dead comes out the next 'zombie' film I'll look forward to will be Danny Boyle's next 28 Days movie, simply because he did something different and said 'hey, these aren't zombies!'. 28 Days Later was a damn good film in contrast to the recent remake of Dawn and had the feeling of isolation that Romero made famous in his original Dead series.
