Keanu Making New Earth Stood Still
Klaatu barada nikto.
Time to set the "Days Without a Remake Announcement" counter back to zero, folks -- and this time around, Keanu Reeves is getting in on the action: Variety reports that Reeves has signed on to star in a new-and-presumably-improved version of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still.
The original Day, one of many films providing allegorical warnings during the dawn of the military-industrial complex, told the tale of a humanoid alien named Klaatu who journeys to Earth with a giant robot named Gort in an effort to convince the human race to change its warlike ways. (Ironically, Klaatu's efforts are underscored with the threat of violence from our interstellar neighbors, but hey, nobody's perfect.)
We know what you're thinking -- that Reeves would be perfect for the role of Gort -- but he has actually agreed to play Klaatu. No other casting announcements have been made, but Scott Derrickson will direct, with David Scarpa handling the screenplay. Twentieth Century Fox is hoping to start production late this year or in early 2008.
Reeves will next be seen in The Night Watchmen, a police drama also starring Forest Whitaker, Chris Evans, and Hugh Laurie.

Bout time they remade THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, and JEOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH! those classic yet dated Doug Mclure films. Roland Emmerich should direct! (Reply to this) |

Highwinder writes: on Aug 27 2007 10:24 AM Oh good grief. One seriously predictable box office failure coming right up. Yet another forgettable preachy liberal movie that will collect dust along with "The Core" in Wal-Mart bargain bins. This movie is gonna suck even worse than the first one. (Reply to this) |

dracus writes: on Aug 27 2007 10:48 AM In reply to this comment (#1075869) I agree Batfink. Other than Spileberg or (dare I suggest?) Lucas, Emmerich would be a great choice for long overdue remakes of The Land That Time Forgot and Journey To The Center of the Earth. Michael E-Bay, if you're reading this and getting ideas, GO AWAY!!! (Reply to this) |

cgcbooks writes: on Aug 27 2007 12:31 PM The original was a classic. I must have seen that film at least 20 times. I also own the DVD. I won't be seeing the remake. No one could replace Michael Rennie. (Reply to this) |

cgcbooks writes: on Aug 27 2007 12:39 PM I think they should just stop making remakes period. 95% of the time, the original is much better. Please start making original films again. The trouble is, all the great writers and directors are dead. (Reply to this) |

opTIMus Nerd writes: on Aug 27 2007 01:15 PM The original was a classic and indicative of it's period. While there's a relevant message there I am having trouble picturing Keanu as Klaatu. That said, I am having no trouble saying, "Klaatu Barada Nikto" in his voice...He could also hold up each Jabba the Hut guard action figure that was named after this. (Reply to this) |

hotbox2001 writes: on Aug 27 2007 02:47 PM NOOOO! the original is one of my favorite movies, any shred of cool that Keanu once had has now vanished, what is going on in Hollywood? if you have to please remake crappy movies and make them good not the other way around! Rennie was perfect in the first movie because no one knew who he was,so 'the chosen one' is hardly appropriate...hey,lets remake 2001 next, but this time 50 Cent and Metallica can do the soundtrack and the aliens can have really cool looking guns an'****..... CodeClearanceBlue writes: on Aug 27 2007 10:22 PM Truly, there are no more movie fans making movies in Hollywood. Just an army of box office-hungry pirahnas skeletonizing classic after classic. God damn it, these movies should not be remade. King Kong, War of the Worlds, Enter the Dragon, and now The Day the Earth Stood Still??? The original versions of these movies are the definitive ones, and any attempt to remake them cannot be disguised as anything other than the shameless business deals that they are. I believe that filmmakers, both independent and studio, have an obligation to preserve a single vision of certain films. And I feel it should be obvious which films these are. And while they're at it, filmmakers should try creating an original concept for a change. Or at least stick to adaptations of written work. What's going to happen when they have remade everything? Remake them again? Bah. I realize I am a dying breed of film fan, and my post will probably spark derision and contempt among today's jaded attention-deficit movie goer. I don't care. If you truly love an art form, you want it preserved for all time, not rehashed over and over again until all the substance is reduced to sludge. But all I can do plead with Hollywood to keep something, anything, sacred. That's my soapbox. (Reply to this) |

Victoria Jones writes: on Oct 21 2007 04:18 PM While Keanu is a darlin, he's simply not the right guy for Klaatu, in my opinion. They should ask John Glover from Smallville! He even LOOKS kind of like Michael Rennie. And he can probably portray Klaatu better too... (Reply to this) |
