A paranormal investigator invites a trio of people to help him examine Hill House, a sinister family estate haunted by the angry souls from its troubled past. Reviews for The Haunting
One of the handful of truly great haunted-house films ever made. (TCM Greatest Classic Films: Horror)
The good news is that the disc presents the film in its original 2.35:1 (anamorphic) widescreen, and Wise's striking compositions put every square inch to use.
This is a horror movie with a brain, and something Hollywood made few of in 1963 and makes even fewer now.
Basically using lighting, camera angles and sound effects, (director Robert) Wise has created a frightening atmosphere that turns an old house into the incarnation of evil.
The best haunted-house movie, period. Director Robert Wise delivers big scares with superb cinematic restraint.
