Consensus: The historical inaccuracies in this high-seas adventure are more then offset by its timeless themes, larger-than-life performances from Clark Gable and Charles Laughton, and Frank Lloyd's superb direction.

The story is based on the fictional accounts written by Charles Nortdhoff and James Norman Hall. English conscripts sailing for Tahiti buckle under the chastisements of cruel Captain William Bligh, savagely portrayed by Charles Laughton. Bligh's grotesque abuses of power, including a brutal flogging that results in the death of the sick old ship's doctor, finally inspire a mutiny on the return voyage, conducted under the leadership of fair-minded officer Fletcher Christian, played by the dashing and heroic Clark Gable. Following the mutiny, Bligh and a few cronies are set onto a small dinghy after the successful muntiy, at which point the real adventure begins--Bligh's 4,000-mile journey from Tahiti to the Dutch East Indies. A solid seagoing adventure epic with breathtaking location photography, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY offers an unparalleled nautical authenticity--the ship photographed and the costumes worn were exact replicas of the 18th-century originals. Epic stuff, beautifully cast, handsomely mounted and directed with passionate conviction.

A big studio film, with still-superb sea sequences and a then-daring erotic interlude with the native girls of Pitcairn Island, this remains irresistible.

An exotic and gripping piece of Hollywood mythology, made with all the technical skill and gloss one associates with Irving Thalberg's MGM.

It's tainted by a fair amount of middlebrow stuffiness, but it's a fleet piece of storytelling and serves to enshrine one of the great ham performances of all time, Charles Laughton's Captain Bligh.

The story is spellbinding, the acting lusty and the spectacle everything you could expect from a Golden Age MGM production -- though sometimes it's a bit too much on the monumental side.

An exciting, perfectly executed production that features Gable at his most magnetic and Laughton at his most commanding.

True MGM classic with memorable Gable and Laughton. Fine production overall.

The first and best of the three versions of the famous mutiny is a big budget MGM production, a stirring sea adventure praised at the time for its narrative pull, great acting of the three leads, and exotic locales--it was Clark Gable's favorite film.

Gable makes a great Fletcher Christian, in his last movie without a mustache. The emotions which cross his face as Bligh commits one indignity after another upon various crew members is great 1930s dramatic acting.

It may not be history, but with Laughton out of control and Gable as the hero, who cares?

Its theme of rebellion against that which binds us resonates today. Mutiny on the Bounty is well acted and well scripted.
