Second Poseidon Trailer Hits the Waves
by Scott Weinberg | March 20, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Click right here to enjoy trailer #2 for what's fast becoming one of my most anticipated early-summer releases. (Mainly because I love the original "Poseidon Adventure," but also because disaster flicks are a whole lot of fun.) This second promo piece features a lot more dialogue and "character moments" than the first one ... and the special effects look pretty darn swanky. Back to Article

With all that cheese on board, my bet is that after its opening weekend The Posiedon's box office will sink faster than the ship. I guess this is Hollywood's lame attempt at some sort of Titanic sequel.

NOT titanic
I see comments posted online here and there making comparison of Poseidon to Titanic. The only real similarity between the two movies is both ships meet disaster at sea. Some who are posting comments about Poseidon being a sequel or ripoff of Titanic are probably not old enough to remember that way before James Cameron's retelling of the Titanic story(Titanic was made 4 times before that) there was a box office smash hit in the early 1970s called "The Poseidon Adventure" based on a novel by Paul Gallico. Peterson's Poseidon bears closer resemblance to that movie than Titanic. Even so, it is still a different story with different characters, different feel, and a different ship. The Poseidon Adventure was about an aging old liner built in the 1920's on her last voyage to the junk heap whereas Peterson's Poseidon is new, luxurious, and state of the art. Judging by the trailers, I think this movie will be a great popcorn muncher with plenty of excitement, scary scenes, likable characters, and believable acting. Peterson has said in interviews this new capsized ship story would not be told in a campy way and I suspect that given the dark feeling of this film, there will probably be very little room for large amounts of "cheese" either. Interestingly, the Poseidon Adventure and Titanic had quite generous amounts of what some would call campiness and cheesiness yet both films did extremely well at the box office.

I too will be there on opening day. The first movie, cheesy as it now appears, was the film that made me want to get into the film business, so it holds a special place in my heart. And Wolfgang Petersen making a film on the water equals a winner in my book. (I even liked The Perfect Storm, admittedly not one of his better efforts.) So, yeah, I'll be watching opening day. I hope his homage includes the shot of the guy falling into the plate glass they did in the first movie. That's still one of the best shots ever committed to film.

It's still just a remake of a cheesy 70's movie that was unique in its day much the same way Earthquake and The Towering Inferno were. So why make it? It's already loaded up with predictable stereotypical passengers, including the obligatory gay guy played by Richard Dreyfus. Speaking of Earthquake and The Towering Inferno; how long will it be before we hear announcements of those being remade? The same old tired crap! These remakes are getting to be like 'The Song That Never Ends.'

Dracus,

Um, Would you like some cheese with your whine? C'mon lighten up. Some of us here enjoy the disaster movie genre and are looking forward to seeing Peterson's creation. Also, Richard doesn't appear to be playing a stereotypical gay character which is refreshing. I don't see him in the trailer behaving like Jack on "Will and Grace". So, these characters aren't the typical passengers you would find say, on a Carnival Cruise, would we really want that? Talk about stereotypes! LOL

Poseidon
Cheesy would be if Jack Jones sang "The Love Boat" theme during the opening sequence.

Looks like it could be fun- a mixture of The Perfect Storm and Titanic.

fuckin' dreyfuss gonna fuck a bitch up.

i once watched richard dreyfuss punch a whole in the side of a sperm whale, he could just do that... and ride the sperm whale to safety. along with kurt, who should be wearing an eye patch. in fact, this movie should be called escape from dreyfuss.

you may have survived cleveland.
you may have escaped from new york,
but this is dreyfuss-town, bitch.

i don't actually know anything about poseidon... in fact, fuck poseidon.

My complaint is with shoddy remakes, not with disaster movies. I saw all of these movies when they were first released in the 70's and back then they were only considered gimmicky movies, but at least the studios tried something new. Such as with Earthquake and surround sound. When that was in the theaters, there were large banks of stereo speakers that shook you out of your seats during the actual earthquake. Hollywood sees a safe market out there for remakes.

I'm sure that there are a lot of bright young writers out there who can revive Hollywood, but as long as there's a buck to be made on unoriginal screenplays and ideas, these new writers haven't got a chance and we're stuck with old crap.

As for the trailer looking good, of course it does, that's a trailer's purpose. But how many times have you gone to a movie because of a great looking trailer only to discover that was the best part of the movie?

I think if you take an old film and put a new spin on it, that could be considered originality to a certain extent. Is it as original as the script for New Idea by Joe Unknown? Probably not, but in the real world studios just arent' going to bank $100 million on a new idea. That's what $10 million indie films are for.

With Poseidon it at least looks like they're going for something a little different. I was a big fan of the original and a big fan of disaster movies (as for the studios doing something new, Earthquake was the only one where they did some gimmick. The rest, including Poseidon, were just "round up the stars and kill them off." I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt, but then again, I tend to be a little less harsh about remakes than many.

There was a time Hollywood took a chance on the unknowns and if they didn't we wouldn't have the likes of Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese and Carpenter. Because of Hollywood's shortsighted and blind love affair for movies that have already been made and it's lack of imagination, we are missing out on the new Spielbergs.

Agreed, but in a strange irony, it's because of how Spielberg, Lucas, et al changed the movie landscape that we are in this very situation. If you haven't seen it, I recommend catching a documentary called "The Blockbuster Imperitive" It talks about these very things and explains far better than I could why Hollywood is the way it is.
