The daughter of the chauffeur (John Willliams) of the wealthy Larabee family, she becomes infatuated with the rakish, younger brother David (William Holden), while spying on their lavish parties as a teenager. Her father sends her to school in Paris to forget her romantic angst, but upon her return, the now fashionable young woman has suddenly become irresistible to David. Since his father and older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart), who runs the family business, have engineered his forthcoming marriage to a wealthy heiress (Martha Hyer), they attempt to derail Sabrina's romance with David. To cool his brother's ardor, Linus temporarily puts David out of commission and begins dating Sabrina simply to distract her, but of course it's he who becomes distracted. When David recovers from his injury and learns that Sabrina is now interested in her brother, the festivities begin. Hepburn, the ultimate ingenue, defines charm in this pleasant comic diversion. It's a Cinderella story that gets turned on its head, a satire about breaking down class and emotional barriers, and a confrontation between New World callousness and Old World humanity.

There may be further objections to the feature's overlength and spotty tempo.

... the results were satisfying, as Bogart played drawing-room comedy with aplomb.

This is never less than glittering entertainment, but somehow a certain measure of lead has found its way into the formula.

It is a story as light as a feather and as old as yesterday's news, as transparent as a society column item and as smug as a foreign-made car. But Mr. Wilder...has made it into a commentary as crisp as a screed in a smart magazine.

Ultimately, what we've got is a light comedy that's super-charged by a strong cast, excellent direction (Billy Wilder keeps things moving) and a sharp script.

Wilder's tastelessness now seems his major artistic strength.

Hampered by an unimaginative script ... nevertheless manages to be a thoroughly charming, delightfully romantic variation of the Cinderella story.
