Each work examines the lonely lives of several people who reside in a hotel on England's south coast. Sibyl, a demure spinster on holiday with her mother, is attracted to a man who claims to be a war hero, but who's hiding his insecurities behind bravado. Eventually, Sibyl finds the courage to stand up to her overbearing mother and live her own life.
