Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon star as father and son in this unique blend of family relationships and international intrigue. Walter Lloyd (Hackman) is a simple businessman raising his normal family in a Texas suburb. He and his wife, Donna, love each other very much. Walter and his son, however, do not quite get along. But when Donna disappears during a trip to Europe, father and son must work together to save her. During the adventure, the son learns that his father is not whom he seems to be--and that the life he once led might have something to do with the mother's disappearance. The story takes place in late-cold-war Europe, where old agents and spies from both sides still haunt the cities. Time has passed, but the scars remain from the old days, and Walter puts himself and his son in grave danger when he reenters the spy network that never really forgot him. TARGET is a mixture of action film, relationship story, and spy movie, pulling off the combination in a way that is believable and original while never seeming forced. Some great chase scenes, unpredictable plot twists, and excellent performances from Hackman and Dillon make TARGET something much more than an average spy thriller. [More]

The plot creaks along and nothing Penn does can align it.
