Tim Burton Making 3-D Alice in Wonderland for Disney
Also: The return of Frankenweenie!

He's already taken filmgoers to Sleepy Hollow and into Willy Wonka's factory -- and now, Variety reports, Tim Burton will team up with Disney to give audiences a new take on Alice in Wonderland.

Burton's Wonderland is part of a new two-picture deal with Disney, one which will also find him bringing an expanded version of his 1984 short film, Frankenweenie, to theaters. Oh, and did we mention that both pictures will be shown in 3-D? Read on:

"Alice in Wonderland"...will combine performance-capture imagery, currently seen in "Beowulf," with live-action footage.

After "Alice," Burton will helm and produce "Frankenweenie," based on his 1984 short film about a pet dog brought back to life by his loyal owner. Pic will be shot in stop-motion animation and shown in digital 3-D.

As the article points out, Disney has been looking to increase its 3-D presence for some time now, and new technology has only helped fuel the studio's ardor. Disney's Oren Aviv tells Variety that Burton was the only director the studio wanted for the Alice script, proving that occasionally, the studio heads really do know what they're doing.

I'll be looking forward to this whether it's typical Tim Burton style or not.

I'd wager that if Disney are willing to re-release an extended frankenweenie (which they originally thought was too scary) they won't totally "disney-a-fy" his vision.

Actually, I would've preferred Burton to tackle American McGee's Alice, since that's more his natural style. Ah well, we shall see how this turns out.

I'm thinking Depp as Cheshire. And how about Helena Bonham Carter voicing Alice?

As cool as this will probably be, I can't help but wish Burton would stop with the re-imaginings already. Of his last 6 movies, only 2 (Corpse Bride & Big Fish) have been based on stories not been previously filmed.

Cool news, although I'm disappointed he didn't do Believe it or Not, and why is he re-doing Frankenweenie anyway? Oh well, interesting to see him reunite with Disney after all this time.

Urk. Such mixed feelings. I love Burton, but hate the MoCap. I love Disney's Alice in Wonderland, but I hate remakes/reboots.

Not sure that Frankenweenie really needs to be brought back though. That was kind of okay for a short film. I dunno if I could stand a full 2 hours of Frankenweenie though.

I love Tim Burton! I can't wait to see his "vision" of Wonderland. It should be nicely demented.

Very cool! Hopefully Disney gets on it's game and makes their 3-D movies look better than they have. So far Nightmare Before Christmas and Meet the Robinsons has been a disappointment.

If they can bring it up to the caliber of Beowulf, I think they'll be good to go

"I dunno if I could stand a full 2 hours of Frankenweenie though."

Good point. I seem to remember the original struggling to find enough story to fill 30 minutes. Given the current trend in remakes, the new version will probably spend an hour delving into the dog's backstory so the audience can discover just why he became Frankenweenie.
