Elixor writes: on Nov 16 2009 06:24 AM More movies I can save money by not seeing. Maybe the aliens will have figured out a way to get past the computer virus that defeated them last time. Even the old V TV series made more sense than that movie. (Reply to this) |

chewie louie writes: on Nov 16 2009 08:32 AM Independence Day was the quintessential popcorn movie. Yeah, it was full of cliches . . . but it worked. The only thing that really bothered me about it were some of the scenes involving the CGI fighter jets. I also wished they showed more action as to how the other countries were fairing in their attempts to repel the invading horde. There is fodder for a sequel, after all, just because the mothership was destroyed and all the other ships were presumably knocked out of the sky, I'm sure a whole bunch of the aliens survived. So what would we have then? A major ground assault on terra firma? meh. It could work. I don't know. Maybe. (Reply to this) |

BlackPanther writes: on Nov 16 2009 09:53 AM I don't know how you can top the first one? The special effects were fantastic. I guess you can work on the characters, but the film will feel contrived and stupid. (Reply to this) |

Elixor writes: on Nov 16 2009 10:05 AM The first one felt contrived and stupid. From that standpoint I suppose it could possibly get better ...... possibly. (Reply to this) |

Paul M. writes: on Nov 16 2009 10:27 AM Let's team him up with Michael Bay and see how many people will use the excuse "It's mindless popcorn entertainment" again. Translation: I'm too dimwitted and uneducated to see what a horrible movie is...back to my screening of "G.I. Joe" for the 5th time. (Reply to this) |

dj Mark writes: on Nov 16 2009 10:47 AM In reply to this comment (#2561748) Just playing devil's advocate here, but are you suggesting that forms of entertainment that appeal to base motivations are only for the "dimwitted and uneducated?" So each time you are invited to attend an amusement park with friends you ALWAYS decline in favor of visiting the museum's latest art exhibit? Just asking. (Reply to this) |

Shatter24 writes: on Nov 16 2009 11:16 AM Good point, dj mark. And comparing G.I. Joe to Independence Day does a disservice to the popcorn films that are exciting, well-told, and emotionally compelling versus the ones that aren't. There are good and bad popcorn films and the former are "good" because they make internal sense, have a strong narrative structure, and compelling heroes (and sometimes villains). I don't want to live in a world without good "popcorn" flicks because I'm not shelling out money for an IMAX version of a Merchant Ivory film. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Nov 16 2009 11:16 AM In reply to this comment (#2561752) Speaking.... only... for myself here, I ALWAYS decline for the same very simple reason; I hate hate hate hate hate... (did I say it enough times?) rollercoasters. Hate em, man. Just hate em. lol. ;p (Reply to this) |
