Twilight (1998)

Part of Twilight's charm is the way it reconfigures Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo in the process of making its own discoveries, not so much imitating or appropriating the earlier films as applying their strategies to goals quite alien to Hawks.

Mr. Benton's smart script, co-written with Richard Russo, allows the fine cast to explore honor, betrayal and desire among people who have lived long enough to know who they really are.

At a slim 94 minutes, there's a lot of stuff that's packed into an awfully small package. Still, the chance to see Newman, Sarandon and Hackman working together is worth a cramp or two.

While the movie is often unconvincing and painfully slow, it offers valuable insights into the cares of older people who no longer are given the opportunity for career adventure and who therefore must rely on themselves to make their own fun.
