A funny, hip, and vibrant action-drama, OUT OF SIGHT tells the story of the unlikely relationship that forms between an FBI agent and a career criminal. After Jack Foley (George Clooney) escapes from jail with the help of his partner, Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames), he takes Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez), a sexy federal agent, hostage. Immediately sparks fly between the two. Eventually they let her go and leave Miami behind, heading directly for Detroit, where they plan to rob a former cellmate of theirs, a wealthy, white-collar criminal (Albert Brooks). When Karen finally locates Foley, a passionate encounter unfurls (edited ingeniously by Anne V. Coates, recalling Nicolas Roeg's classic DON'T LOOK NOW). As Foley zeroes in on his target, Karen must decide which side she's on. Soderbergh's film is a raucous ride through the criminal underworld, featuring spot-on performances by Clooney and Lopez. It's the supporting cast that makes OUT OF SIGHT so unforgettable, however; Rhames, Steve Zahn, Luis Guzman, and especially Don Cheadle deliver hysterical turns that keep the laughs coming as the tension continues to mount. Reviews for Out of Sight
A splendid reminder of just how assured, intelligent and involving Soderbergh's movies can be.
With Out of Sight, Steven Soderbergh returns to cracking form with a sharp, funny, classy movie that leaves a wry grin on your face long after the credits roll.
Faintly melancholy and alluringly fatalistic, this mercurial romance passing as a crime thriller is slyly entertaining and darkly sexy.
Soderbergh finds the perfect equilibrium between mainstream entertainment and arty panache, lacing this heist movie/romantic comedy with character-motivated time shifting, prominent freeze-frames, a funky soundtrack and an all-around hip vibe.
Steven Soderbergh's most ambitious and most accomplished work to date.
From the first shot to the last, Mr. Clooney is in complete command of the screen in the assured manner of the biggest stars in the past, and he doesn't need a ton of special effects and digital enhancement to generate excitement.
An outstanding crime film from director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Frank, who adapted Elmore Leonard's novel.
Un divertissement aussi «cool» et intelligent qu’un Ocean’s Eleven qui s’affiche sous un enrobage esthétique aussi solidement élaboré que celui de l’excellent The Limey.
It's best to think of this as a Pulp Fiction-lite clone, but a darn good clone.
Soderbergh and his longtime cinematographer Elliot Davis have given us an action film that looks as sleek and moody as Krzysztof Kieslowski's Red.
Out of Sight is best at electric scenes between its romantic leads. Clooney and Lopez have the kind of chemistry that classics are made of.
...entertaining enough while you're watching it, but instantly forgettable.
It's amusing, entertaining and intriguing, even though the second half is shaky, as the film makes a seemingly uncomfortable transition into more serious material.
The film owes a lot of its style to those produced by Quentin Tarantino, focusing heavily on characterization and quirky cinematography and not just pounding out a linear storyline.
A pleasurable and genial jewel-heist tale that itself is just shy of being a real gem.
