On a rainy night in 1946, novelist Maurice Bendrix (two-time Oscar® nominee Ralph Fiennes) has a chance meeting with Henry Miles (Oscar® nominee Stephen Rea), husband of his ex-mistress Sarah (Oscar® nominee Julianne Moore), who abruptly ended their affair two years before. Bendrix's obsession with Sarah is rekindled; he succumbs to his own jealousy and arranges to have her followed. As the investigation progresses, Bendrix relives his passionate memories of their affair during The Blitz in London. He discovers her diary and reads her account of the affair. It is as different from his as night is from day. He re-enters her life and confronts once more the consuming love they had for each other and the reason for its annihilation. -- © 1999 Columbia Pictures [More]

The whole thing is beyond purple and yet so careful and reverent you can't even enjoy it as camp.

What a sad and melancholy piece of work. ... Fiennes basically reprises his English Patient role as the heroic destroyer of covenants and promises.

Writer/director Neil Jordan takes the right approach to the material. Instead of trying to spruce it up, he simply moves in closer.

Neil Jordan's film captures an unyielding sense, even almost to a fault, of romantic realism and its often underlying sadness.
