Consensus: Even though Oscar-bearers Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duval came aboard for this project, the quality of Gone in 60 Seconds is disappointingly low. The plot line is nonsensical, and even the promised car-chase scenes are boring.

Runtime: 2 hrs 7 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

Synopsis: Memphis Raines (Nicholas Cage) is a former car thief who is forced to come out of retirement when his younger brother, Kip (Giovanni Ribisi), is unable to deliver 50 expensive cars to dangerous... Memphis Raines (Nicholas Cage) is a former car thief who is forced to come out of retirement when his younger brother, Kip (Giovanni Ribisi), is unable to deliver 50 expensive cars to dangerous smuggler Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston). With his brother's life on the line, Memphis must enlist his old car-stealing partners for help in order to pull off the ultimate crime. His team includes his mentor, Otto (Robert Duvall), and an old flame (Angelina Jolie), plus a crew of other colorful characters. Once he gets them all together, Memphis has to do the impossible: organize the theft of 50 cars from all over Los Angeles in a single night, hampered by rivals, security systems, and the best efforts of the LAPD detective (Delroy Lindo) who is out to get him. GONE IN 60 SECONDS is a fun, action-packed movie featuring producer Jerry Bruckheimer's trademarks: a simple, heartfelt story, comedy, spectacular action, an excellent cast of stars and character actors, and an amazing car chase through the crowded streets of Los Angeles. This film is based on the cult classic 1974 movie of the same name, and it's a must-see for lovers of classic cars or action fans of any stripe. Dominic Sena, the director of KALIFORNIA, directed this fast-moving crime-adventure extravaganza. [More]

It's just kinda dull though, unless you get excited by 60s Thunderbirds, Chevies and wot not.

Where the original had too many car chases and not enough plot or characterisation, this has too much plot, too many characters and not enough metal crunching, tyre squealing action.

What makes such threadbare character development all the more insulting is that Gone in Sixty Seconds has assembled a war chest of acting talent and then let it idle.

It collapses into a heap of ridiculously over-the-top stunts, movie cliches and surprisingly sappy dialog.

It's just a mechanical exercise in looking at machinery, designed for pre-pubescent boys.

In this film we learn that it takes 8,000 lbs. of pressure to crush a car but only one credited screenwriter (Scott Rosenberg) to pound out such a lame script.

Perfectly dreadful in every respect, this big-budget remake of the late H.B. Halicki's 1974 indie hit may well rep the nadir of the Bruckheimer (and Simpson) franchise, and doesn't even rate on the most basic level as a good car-chase picture.

I found it more pleasurable as a time waster than either Mission: Impossible.

Comfortably cheesy -- a real beer-and-pizza movie.

So clumsy is the film that while our 'heroes' are 'boosting' their 50 cars in 24 hours, the audience never has a clue how many they have successfully stolen.

This is another one of those films that fits into the “it is what it is” category, only it’s better than that. It is what it is and does it really, really well.

It's fun for a couple of hours and provides the requisite eye candy, but that's about all.
