Consensus: The plot and basis for jokes are slight, but Saving Grace is indeed saved by some charming performances, most notably Brenda Blethyn's.

Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins

Genre: Comedies

Set in the beautiful misty fishing town of Port Liac in Cornwall England, SAVING GRACE--an easy-going comic gem--centers on Grace Trevethan (Brenda Blethlyn), a sweet and modest middle-aged lady, whose husband commits suicide, leaving her with his grave financial problems. While real estate agents from London prey on Grace, trying to take away her home to settle the debts, she and her faithful gardener, Matthew (Craig Ferguson), devise a plan to grow enough marijuana in her greenhouse to break even. Wiring the greenhouse with super-bright growing lamps that cause the locals to wear sunglasses at night, having the ladies for "tea" resulting in fits of laughter and silly behavior, and pulling the wool over the local vicar's eyes, the whole town gets involved in this secret "joint venture." Once Grace harvests her crop, she hits the high road to London as a pusher, trying to sell the dope to a major dealer and cash out. Director Nigel Cole has hit the nail on the head with this film. The musical score from Mark Russell has a folky, feel-good beat, and the careful filming is colorful and clear. Never once does SAVING GRACE frown on its illegal subject matter, which makes its story all the more entertaining. [More]

Charming and entertaining enough to appease those who enjoyed the brand of humor previously found in the likes of The Full Monty and Waking Ned Devine.

After an uproarious first half, Saving Grace arrives at its conclusion somewhat hastily and conveniently. But to its credit, it still maintains a sunny comic mellow.

What could have been clever and lovable falls to contrivance and preciousness, a woeful mix given that the film also wants to be edgy.

Modestly funny all the way through but too cozy.

People, places, dope -- everything in Saving Grace rings true. Makes for a delightful movie.

Beautifully shot on location with sure comic timing by director Nigel Coles, Saving Grace is a real high in a season filled with unfunny comedies.

This sort of thing may not be your cup of tea, but if it is, it's a lovely brew.

Ferguson and Blethyn worked hard to add some substance to the plot and characters, even while letting the surface seem shallow and easy.

Imagine a Friday when there are only three cars ahead of you at the Bay Bridge toll plaza, you go out to a long, delicious lunch with friends and then leave work early to go to a baseball game ... That's how I felt after seeing Saving Grace.

It has two great British landmarks: champion actress Brenda Blethyn and that wonderful rugged Cornwall coast. All that's enough for a temporary high.

The film is hard to resist, with a bouncy energy, a pop score that includes Norman Greenbaum's 1970 hippie classic 'Spirit in the Sky,' and a buoyant message of self-redemption.
