What raises this venture a few notches above your normal acne fare is an extremely clever screenplay

This production, these situations and characters, are to Shakespeare what advertising is to truth.

As satirical as it is romantic, this is one teen film that is wise enough to span generations in its appeal.

It's a fast-food film, easy to digest, but nothing remarkable or memorable.

Unfortunately, much of this potentially good material is paced like a bad sitcom.

It includes some genuinely funny moments, solid performances from its too-old-to-be-in-high-school cast, and respect for its likely pre-teen audience.

A routine exercise in teen-targeted silliness.

I doubt I would be able to find ten things I hate about 10 Things I Hate About You, but the positive aspects of the film far out-number ten.

Despite a tinny script, the cast puts in fine performances in what is a very unfunny movie. But the praise stops there.

Easily transcends its hackneyed plot through vivacious acting, crackling dialogue, and sympathetic characters.

No one in this film is a big star, but everyone is a capable actor.

The pleasingly acerbic Stiles gives it her all, and if the script had had one-tenth the zest of the now-classic "AtomicShakespeare" episode of the TV series "Moonlighting" she might have managed to make something of the vehicle.

Definitely a cut above the current crop of teen-oriented comedies, thanks to an appealing cast of fresh faces, as well as a surprisingly literate script.

Overall, it plays well because of its non-stop pace, the interesting relationship between the sisters, and most of all, the enjoyable and engaging performances by stars-to-be Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

The script is surprisingly witty and filled with razor-sharp barbs hurled from just about every character.
