Consensus: A scattered mob movie that employs every mafia cliche and fails to establish an identity of its own.

Giovanni Ribisi plays his cousin Joey, the slightly unhinged boss of the local crime family--they've been friends since they were kids. Brad Renfro is Vincent, Tommy's dim-witted younger brother and Joey's right-hand man after Tommy left to join the Marines. There are lots of violent flashbacks to when all these guys brawled around the old neighborhood and went to mob funerals. Now there's a villainous Italian drug lord trying to seize control and a turf war is imminent. It's up to Tommy to take the drug lord down without getting his little brother killed or Joey indicted in the process. Piper Perabo (COYOTE UGLY) is Tommy's love interest, an attractive mob widow now tending bar at a strip club co-owned by the coke-snorting thug who killed her husband (Dash Mihok). Episodic and entertaining, 10th AND WOLF plays out like a greatest-hits collection of scenes from other mob movies, but this is not a bad thing. An array of well-known names show up in bit parts: Leslie Ann Warren is great as Joey's falling-down-drunk of a mother, Dennis Hopper is an old-time Mafia guy, Val Kilmer is a deranged bar patron, Tommy Lee (ex of Motley Crue and Pamela Anderson) is one of Joey's crew, and Brian Dennehy is an unscrupulous federal agent. A respectable addition to the packed pantheon of watchable but all too familiar Mafia-themed movies.

Coming from a guy who just won an Oscar for screenwriting? One has the right to expect something a little less rote, redundant, and oppressively familiar as 10th & Wolf.

A rather conventional plot is invigorated by intense lead performances from Marsden, Renfro and Ribisi, whose Joey is continually ready to explode in fierce anger, as well as a very good supporting cast, particularly Dennehy and Lesley Anne Warren.

This works both as an action film and Greek tragedy.

You get to laugh, see some blood and even get choked up a couple of times. Not too shabby, eh?

The narrative is cluttered with backstory -- and the endless digressions overwhelm the efforts of a generally strong cast that includes cameos by Val Kilmer and by Ligati as one of Reggio's foot soldiers.

There's so little satisfaction to be had from the derivative set pieces and predictable plot twists that, mostly, you just want it to be over.

The movie doesn't miss a cliché, ineptly lifting liberally from The Godfather and GoodFellas, among other classics.

At this late date, filmmakers who draw inspiration from the Mafia had better have a whole new angle to offer. Otherwise, they'll end up with a movie like 10th & Wolf.
