Beginning in 1988, INSIDE follows college professor Marty Strydom (Stoltz) as he is arrested for conspiring to overthrow the government and thrown in jail where he is interrogated and tortured by a sadistic officer, Colonel Kruger (Hawthorne). The film then cuts to ten years later, after apartheid, and it is Colonel Kruger who finds himself on trial now, trying to slip through the fingers of a black investigator (Gossett) who had been one of his prisoners. Filled with bravura performances, especially Mr. Hawthorne's Kruger, INSIDE is a harrowing and brutal look at the cruelty of the apartheid era in South Africa. [More]

Reviews for Inside
Pedantic and preachy, Penn's film tries to be an almost unwatchably horrific picture and succeeds.
