Also known as LA CIUDAD, this film is four separate stories of immigrants and their experiences in the harsh reality of New York City as they try to make a living in the land of opportunity. The first story, "Bricks", tells of men looking for work who find jobs cleaning bricks for fifteen cents each. In "Home" a young immigrant meets a girl from his same home town, but loses her due to a cruel twist of fate. "The Puppeteer" tells of a street performer who lives in his car with his daughter and wants to enroll her in school. Finally, "Seamstress" tells of an underpaid worker who learns that her daughter needs money for an operation, and a confrontation ensues with her bosses. THE CITY is a tough, intense film in the tradition of such neo-realist masterpieces as THE BICYCLE THIEF, showing the everyday, human struggles of people on the bottom rungs of society. [More]

These four portraits of poor Latin American immigrants living in New York City draw out our fury over the large gap between the haves and the have-nots in America.

it is the absence of any kind of inner force in the film that disturbs me more than its morbid subject matter
