Consensus: Despite a good performance by Orlando Jones, the movie is ruined by a ridiculous, messy plot and fails to generate laughs.

DOUBLE TAKE opens in Hitchcock fashion with a Manhattan businessman finding himself on the run; He is suspected of illegal activities, and has to prove his innocence while being pursued by the authorities. Hitchcock's classic version of this story is NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959). However, in spite of its thriller pedigree, DOUBLE TAKE is something else. Writer-director George Gallo has taken the classic elements, filtered them through the 1990s action and buddy films and produced a frenetic comedy built around the volatile chemistry of Orlando Jones and Eddie Griffin. Jones has the Cary Grant part--he is Daryl Chase, a Wall Street investment banker dealing in international accounts who becomes the fall guy when a Mexican client is revealed as the front man for a drug cartel. Griffin has the Eve Marie Saint part, but his Freddy Tiffany is no ice-cool Hitchcock blonde. Instead, he's the fast-talking streetwise hustler who aids and abets Chase as he is pursued by the police, the FBI, the CIA, and the DEA. DOUBLE TAKE swallows up the clichés of the innocent-on-the-run movie and the buddy movie, then--with Jones and Griffin trading quips and identities--throws them pell-mell on the screen in one long hilarious stream. There's nothing intrinsically worthless about clichéd comedy; it merely requires great skill in execution. Double Take lacks great skill in execution.

Slick, self-assured, and thoroughly awful, Double Take is a primo contender for worst movie of 2001.

The kind of movie you'll encounter in the wasteland of late-night cable -- and watch with a measure of awe.

The blame for this bomb falls squarely on writer-director George Gallo, who provides suitable urban dialogue for his characters but fails to pen a logical script.

The schematics to a nuclear plant are more decipherable than this moribund product, which the studio describes as a 'comedy-thriller.'

Another racial cartoon buddy movie that eagerly flogs its best laugh -- indeed, its only laugh -- in the trailer.

Let's hope that next time Jones chooses a movie that's worth a second look.

If Big Momma's House made you belly-laugh, Double Take won't. If Scary Movie gave you convulsions, Double Take won't. If The Nutty Professor left you delirious, Double Take ... heck, you know the drill.

The entire movie plays like a reject for a convoluted Saturday Night Live skit.

The lead characters are fun and funny and there is ample gunplay for the shoot-em-up fans.

I don't know which is the worst part of the film: Eddie Griffin's overacting, Orlando Jones' non-acting, or the ugly mutt that passes as Griffin's sidekick.

Writer-director George Gallo seems interested only in tiresome gags for lowest common denominator audiences.

It would be one thing if it didn't make sense and was funny, but there isn't one second of entertainment for anyone that doesn't require a drool bib.
