Consensus: As far as westerns go, Texas Rangers is strictly mediocre stuff.

Runtime: 1 hr 32 mins

Genre: Westerns

Synopsis: This Western, set in the 1870s, tells the story of the Texas Rangers, a group of young, aggravated vigilantes (James Van Der Beek, Usher Raymond, Randy Travis, Ashton Kusher, and Robert Patrick)... This Western, set in the 1870s, tells the story of the Texas Rangers, a group of young, aggravated vigilantes (James Van Der Beek, Usher Raymond, Randy Travis, Ashton Kusher, and Robert Patrick) that united to fight against the outlaws who threatened the safety of their families and their neighbors. Ranger Leander McColloy (Dylan McDermott) is the leader of the group, and the one who originally organizes the men to revolt against the violent predators who wreaked havoc across the Texan frontier. As large pools of people converged upon the vortex of the Texas Rangers' territories--new American settlers moving west to claim their own land, Mexicans pouring in over the border, and Native Americans struggling to reclaim their original property--anarchy seemed inevitable. Ranches were broken apart and pillaged by swarming gangs of rowdy cowboys. Only the Texas Rangers could maintain peace where local law enforcement could not. This exciting, historically gauged action drama will delight audiences with a rough-and-tumble story of vigilante victory. [More]

[A] almost refreshing for its total lack of ambition.

...plays like it was led to slaughter in the editing room after being taken away from a director who'd read "Westerns for Dummies.

Large cast is uniformly fine with tongue-twisting, pulpy dialogue, though pic presents only brief flashes of what look to be fully realized characterizations jettisoned at some point during production or post.

If you like most Western films, you'll probably enjoy Texas Rangers -- it's slightly above average in the genre -- but if you aren't a fan of Westerns, this one certainly won't sway your opinion.

Although it's not the worst western ever made (The Terror of Tiny Town will forever hold that title), it is one of the most mediocre, falling prey to more cliches than you can shake a six-gun at.

A bit of a mess, but it's not unenjoyable and it boasts a kind of absurd sincerity that's actually rather appealing.

Wish it had a few other things, you know, like an adult sensibility, a closer allegiance to the truth, and maybe a little concern for how the English of 1875 was spoken.

Texas Rangers is yet another such mediocre cinematic exercise: bullet- and cliche-ridden, shallow in characterization, and unrelentingly dull in its storytelling.
