Jeremy Sumpter, so strong in the exemplary horror film Frailty (2002), is a superb Peter Pan.

Barrie's classic story of the boy who wouldn't grow up - and the girl whose family insists that she must - has never been fully realized onscreen. Until now. Universal Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Revolution Studios are proud to present the first live-action feature film version of Peter Pan since the silent era. And for the first time, a boy - Jeremy Sumpter (Frailty) - stars in the title role, opposite Jason Isaacs (The Patriot, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) as Captain James Hook. In stifling Edwardian London, Wendy Darling mesmerizes her brothers nightly with bedtime tales of swordplay, swashbuckling and the fearsome Hook. But the children become the heroes of an even greater story when Peter Pan flies into their nursery one night and leads them over moonlit rooftops through a galaxy of stars to the lush jungles of Neverland. Wendy and her brothers join Peter and the Lost Boys in an exhilarating life free of grown-up rules, while also facing the inevitable showdown with Hook and his bloodthirsty pirates. With unbounded imagination and the latest in visual effects, writer/director P.J. Hogan (My Best Friend's Wedding) and producers Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick (Gladiator, Stuart Little) bring all the wonder, danger and excitement of this timeless tale to life. The cast also includes Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense, Rushmore) as Mrs. Darling, Academy Award® nominee Lynn Redgrave (Gods and Monsters) as Aunt Millicent, Richard Briers (Ever Decreasing Circles) as Smee and French sensation Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) as Tinker Bell. Rachel Hurd-Wood makes her screen debut as Wendy. [More]

Reviews for Peter Pan
I walked in anticipating a sweet kiddie fantasy and was surprised to find a film that takes its story very seriously indeed, thank you, and even allows a glimpse of underlying sadness.
Isaacs tops the cast (even Richard Briers' delightful Smee) as an imperious, ironic, murderous, bitter and lonely Hook.
The movie may not soar, but this awfully big adventure is far from earthbound.
It ends up being the grown-up version of a children's story, and may have trouble finding an audience.
Hogan doesn't know when to start and stop playing down to his audience of children, and so he turns the immature goofiness on and off without warning.
It is not a film for the ages, nor [is it] the definitive presentation. But its marvelous visuals will certainly entertain the kiddies.
An enchanting classic story which is lovingly, even tenderly told in a movie that will become a classic itself, with all the happy thoughts and fairy dust it takes to fly.
Has the courage to imagine Peter Pan as a tragic figure, the ultimate narcissist.
If you're looking for a sweet, funny, edgy adventure tale, you don't have to catch the second star to the right, straight on 'til morning, check out Peter Pan.
Move over, Elf. Australian director P.J. Hogan has put together an equally delightful holiday treat anchored by two magical lead performances.
Simultaneously a faithful retelling of J.M. Barrie’s beloved story and an audacious reinterpretation.
What's next? Oklahoma! without the musical numbers? What does Hogan's version offer in place of songs? A sex-charged fairy tale.
There's absolutely nothing innocent about this Peter Pan; he's a leering and repulsive twerp.
This isn't the Disney-fied version of "Peter Pan." In fact, it's better than the animated classic.
This “Peter Pan” is not a story, but a video game. Kids like video games, it’s true, but they do not long to live inside them.
All the prior Peter Pans to date have either been waifish women or a middle-aged man...
I've never been a big fan of Peter Pan in any of its numerous incarnations... so imagine my surprise as I fell victim to the rapturous spell of this new version.
This is by no means a bad film, just one that's not as successful as we'd wish.
