Consensus: This pointless remake of the classic TV series only offers generic characters and gags.

In THE HONEYMOONERS--an update of the classic 1950s television comedy that starred Jackie Gleason--Ralph Kramden (Cedric the Entertainer) is a New York City bus driver and irrepressible dreamer whose mind constantly whirs with new plans to get rich. But six years after meeting his wife, Alice (Gabrielle Union), none of his schemes have resulted in anything more than clutter in the closet of their Brooklyn apartment. When Alice's dream of buying a home looks like it could become a reality, the Kramdens team up with their best friends who live upstairs, Ed (Mike Epps) and Trixie (Regina Hall), to amass the $20,000 for a down payment before a shady land developer (Eric Stoltz) beats them to it. THE HONEYMOONERS gives a few nods to the original series, like Ed's trademark hat, and a sweet twist on Ralph's signature line: instead of threatening to knock Alice to the moon, he promises to take her there someday. Cedric the Entertainer is an ebullient screen presence, revealing the good heart beneath Ralph's swagger as he struggles to keep from letting Alice down yet again. With its talented cast and zippy script, THE HONEYMOONERS is a comedy anyone can enjoy. [More]

It could be part-autobiographical for director John Schultz who blunders through a tediously half-baked plot and fails to make it pay off.

Alas, there's not a hint of creativity or wit here.

The script (credited to four screenwriters) uses a plethora of already-dated urban inside humor that reeks of pandering.

A disconnected series of skits and one-liners likely to satisfy children while only infuriating nostalgic adults in search of the magic of the Fifties sitcom.

A stroll down sitcom memory lane in name only, The Honeymooners seems as if any resemblance to the original TV classic could only be accidental.

Fans of the original series probably won't care for it, and the rest of us could probably get the same kind of entertainment in our living rooms, for free.

Even if one were willing to overlook the fact that The Honeymooners is virtually nothing like the show that supposedly inspired it, the film would still come off as an unnaturally prolonged, second-rate UPN sitcom.

"The Honeymooners" is a good-natured movie that's not so much a remake as a nod to the old television series.

If we can recast Jackie Gleason’s signature role of Ralph Kramden with Cedric the, ahem, “Entertainer,” why not Jim Carrey as Cliff Huxtable in “The Cosby Show Movie”?

Cedric the Entertainer inhabits Kramden's role comfortably, but there's no rage or bite in his acting.
