Trailer Bulletin: Funny Games
The trailer for Michael Haneke's remake of Michael Haneke's Funny Games is online, and MSN Video's got it.
As with the 1997 original, Haneke's new Funny Games follows a family's struggle to stay alive after their lakeside vacation is interrupted by a surprise visit by some sadistic psychopaths. Naomi Watts and Tim Roth take over for Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Muhe in the lead roles.
Haneke's original film polarized critics -- it's currently at 60 percent on the Tomatometer -- but it had some interesting twists; for instance, one of the villains had a habit of breaking the fourth wall, and a lot of the violence takes place off-screen. American audiences, of course, like their violence front and center, and if this trailer is any indication, that's what they'll get. Click on the link below to see more!

on Sep 17 2007 08:40 AM Hmmm... sounds like an interesting time for a sidebar on what directors and what films by that director you would like to see remade by said director. Might as well flush the ideas out now, because I have that bad feeling about a trend starting... (Reply to this) |

on Sep 17 2007 09:13 AM The original movie was damn near perfect so a remake is hardly necessary. However, since Michael Haneke is once again in the director's chair and the cast is pretty top-notch, I'm looking forward to this. It will be interesting to see how close the remake is to the original or, more to the point, how much the story has to be softened for the multiplex crowd. As long as Haneke hasn't decided to re-imagine the film with a happier ending, it should be good. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 17 2007 09:38 AM Somewhere along the way this movie will be effed up. Why is he remaking it in the first place - to make more money by attracting Americans? My guess is, he has some "re-imagining" in mind and will change it, probably to the chagrin of fans. That being said, Funny Games is overrated on RT in general. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 17 2007 10:15 AM This remake phenomenon hits me every few months. Sheesh. It's here to stay. It's frikking here to stay. And you know what? There is nothing original left in the world ANYWAY. (Reply to this) |

on Oct 08 2007 10:28 PM The original Funny Games attempted to show audiences the horrific reality of violence as opposed to the idea of violence to which we (some of us) have become sensitised through the media, video games blah blah - the film %u2018resensitises%u2019 us to the reality of violence. Problem was, the film wasn%u2019t in English and American audiences couldn%u2019t identify with any of the actors. As the message behind this film is most relevant to American audiences, it makes sense that he remade it for them. (Reply to this) |
