Kim Newman
This take on Halloween is grim and nasty, but never remotely scary. [More]

After seeing at the cinema when it came out I would agree with you. Watching it again though, at home with friends who do not find the original scary, it actually seems like a pretty effective reworking.

I don't understand how the director's cut is enhanced by the rape scene though. It seems coincidental and therefore gratuitous.

Personally, opion is extremely skewed. I know you will not read this, but bare with me.

Rob Zombie created a very effective atmosphere, as did carpenter in the original. Zombie did a fantastic job and did some very innovative things. He works need to be commended.

Watch the theatrical version, which is, with out a doubt better than the UNRATED version. Either way, Zombie can get emotion out of an audience with things that you would otherwise praise sophisticated drama directors for.

Whether or not you are trying to anger the fans of this film, or its genre, but Rob is one of the best and most talented horror directors to come along in years.

The problem with this film is the first act. With Zombie's desire to flesh out Myers' background and therefore make him a sympathetic character, he opens up more questions than he answers.
So, you're trying to tell me that Michael's having grown up in a disfunctional, redneck family, where everybody is profane, disrespectful, mocking, and the mother's a hot stripper caused the "perfect storm" of his (un)life.
If that's the case then this country should be over-run with psychotic killer boogeymen. What do you think?
