See Sweeney Todd Photos!
An early glimpse of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
by Jeff Giles | August 21, 2007

Half the fun in any Tim Burton production is seeing pictures of the director's visions come to life, especially when Johnny Depp is involved -- and that's why you're excited that we've got pictures from December's Burton/Depp reunion, Sweeney Todd!

Sweeney Todd, if you're unfamiliar, is the latest adaptation of the classic Sondheim musical about a most unusual barber. From the synopsis:

JOHNNY DEPP and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." DEPP stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the faces of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard of again." Joining Depp is HELENA BONHAM CARTER as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney's amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes ALAN RICKMAN, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison, TIMOTHY SPALL as the Judge's wicked associate Beadle Bamford and SACHA BARON COHEN as a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

brice, you are a tool. tim burton is a decent director, who's made as many average films as he has great.

Brice can have his/her opinion just like you have yours.

I enjoy most of Tim Burton's work(Nightmare Before Christmas and Big Fish have to be my favorites of his). Count me in for this one.

I don't beleive I've ever been disappointed with a Tim Burton film. I'm all over this movie. Burton, Sir R. Scott, and Aronofsky are a few select directors that will draw me to a movie. Doesn't mean that they can't and won't make a crap movie, but so far I've grown to have faith in their work.

This IS a musical and none of the principals are singers. Big concern.

Should be sweet, didn't know Timothy Spall was in this, which makes it even cooler. Sleepy Hollow is my favorite Burton film, but Mars Attacks amuses me every time.

Didn't Depp have a couple of solo pieces in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Cody, you're a douche.

Why attack somebody for liking somebody else's work?

Sweeney Todd is one of the best musicals ever (and my all-time favorite), with brilliant score and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The cast is very talented, even if Johnny Depp isn't rough enough to be Sweeney and that HBC should be the Beggar Woman (Helen Mirren should be Mrs. Lovett, hello!!). That aside, with Tim Burton at the helm, this looks like a deliciously dark interpretation of a phenomenal show.

Visually this looks like every other Burton flick. You'd think he'd mix it up a bit.

So, is this BASED on the musical, or will this be a musical with singing and dancing, and all that bull****? If it's based on it, I'll go see it, the story sounds cool, plus the team of Burton/Depp is solid.

i agree, MadmanCody. i wasn't necessarily stating that the adjectives "twisted, warped, imaginitive & fresh" were the makings of a phenomonal director. i just can't ignore the mind that burton has is far from ordinary.. or for that matter, normal. i like to look at "edward scissorhands" as his "greatest" acheivement, if not only because of all the fingerprints burton displays of his own life as a struggling director attempting to find a place in this "hollywood" world of vivid, colorful, yet formulaic & mediocre stories. as far as "average" or "decent" i would go so far as to say any or every one of his films that --for whatever reason-- lacks his keen ability to create dark, moody atmospheres with creepy, albeit likeable characters. (personally, "big fish" & "planet of the apes" come directly to mind)

I am not a Tim Burton movie expert at all, but I think Tim Burton "takes care" of his actors and his audience. The actors do not seem totally exhausted or burned-out by the end of production, and the audience seems to have been considered when the movie was created. I thought Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were beautifully made. I think Johnny Depp is a great actor who should be protected from exploitation -- and Burton seems careful with Depp. Just my opinion - as I said, I don't know very much about movies.
