You already knew the release date? You already cleared your schedule for that day, and circled the date on your
calendar? Actually, Dreamworks is bumping up Sweeney Todd from a limited
release to a wide release. According to Variety, Burton had been pushing for
the film to go wide, concerned that a limited release would give the impression
Sweeney was an arthouse flick.

An adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical, Sweeney Todd stars Johnny Depp as the titular barber, out to avenge the death of his wife and child. Despite the brouhaha over Warner Bros. (the film's UK distributor) allegedly snipping Sweeney Todd for a PG-13 rating, Dreamworks and Paramount still appear ready to release the movie as an R picture in the US.

Maybe a trimmed version of the movie might work... *thinks...* "Coming this Christmas: Sweeney Todd, the Pillow Maker of Fleet Street! The musical about a man who devotes his life to cutting people's beards and then filling pillows with the trimmings. Rated PG-13!" ...Ummmmm, maybe not. (Reply to this) |

Metafact writes: on Aug 28 2007 07:34 PM Woo-hoo! Dreamworks and Paramount rock! Down with Warner Bros! On a side note, I am a little surprised that a such a supposedly violent film (a musical, no less) would get a wide release. The studios must've really liked it for that to happen. (Reply to this) |

paddy garcia writes: on Aug 29 2007 09:33 AM I think wide release is definitely the way to go. After all, this is big bugdet Tim Burton film, not a small budget, experimental, art house type film. The "R" rating is a huge relief, if that's true. I don't want to see some watered down version, just because some studio (Warner Bros)wants to make it more accessible, just to line their pockets. OAKTREELIVE writes: on Aug 29 2007 10:53 AM The release change is one thing, the fact that it's coming out uncut is the best news though. This seems a bit of a flip flop given movie cutting culture in this country though for it to be cut in the UK (not a PG-13 as this article says since I'm pretty sure the MPAA haven't hopped the pond yet). That and Focus releasing Lust, Caution NC-17 is a nice big screw you to the MPAA. (Reply to this) |
