Total Recall: Clint Eastwood Behind the Camera
We promise to make your day with a countdown of his best-reviewed directorial efforts.

He's gone from TV star to action hero to one of the biggest names in Hollywood -- on both sides of the camera. We're talking, of course, about Clint Eastwood, and with his latest directorial effort, Changeling, going wide this weekend, we at RT thought the time was right for a look back at the best-reviewed films of his career behind the lens.

You'll find the expected entries here -- no Eastwood list would be complete without Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby, for instance -- but the length of his directorial resume might surprise you, and we've reached back to the beginning, set the Tomatometer for "Make My Day," and come up with a list that'll take you from the high plains to the sands of Iwo Jima. Do you feel lucky, punks?

10. Mystic River (2003)
Tomatometer: 87 percent

With Clint Eastwood behind the camera and Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, and Marcia Gay Harden in front of it, the film adaptation of Dennis Lehane's Mystic River was pretty much a gimme for one of the highest-profile releases of 2003, and it didn't disappoint, netting four Oscar noms (and two wins), almost $100 million in domestic gross, and enough positive reviews to earn an 87 percent Tomatometer. Although critics were quick to point out that Mystic River doesn't equal or surpass Eastwood's finest work, his trademark no-frills approach made a good fit for the source material, and the performances from the stellar cast were as strong as you'd expect. Empire Magazine's Alan Morrison reflected the sentiments of many of his peers when he wrote, "While not quite the equal of the novel, it's more complex, emotionally-charged and better acted than the average Hollywood thriller."

9. White Hunter, Black Heart (1990)
Tomatometer: 90 percent

The easy (and, it must be said, mostly fair) knock against Eastwood as an actor is that his characters tend to occupy a fairly narrow emotional bandwidth -- one best reflected by Eastwood's natural gift for portraying flinty, no-nonsense types. Squint your eyes and speak in a whispery growl, and odds are you'll be doing a fair-to-middling Eastwood impression -- with the notable exception of his performance in 1990's White Hunter, Black Heart, where he takes Peter Viertel's thinly fictionalized account of John Huston's conduct on the set of 1951's The African Queen and uses it as an excuse to plumb the depths of a man's soul -- and turns in one of the bravest and most atypical performances of his career. Eastwood's steady-handed direction offered fitting support for his performance; as Janet Maslin of the New York Times wrote, the movie "makes it clear that his directorial ambitions have by now outstripped his goals as an actor."

Man I love Eastwood's movie's, cant wait to see Changeling(screw the reviews) and Gran Torino. My favorite one he directed is mystic river, shame it lost best picture to the Lord of the Rings3(great but not as great as MR).

Yes he is a great director and I'd see "Changeling". I've only seen "Million Dollar Baby" and the even better "Letters From Iwo Jima". But, AntonChigurh I disagree with you on Best Picture for 2003, but then again I haven't seen "Mystic River", so I guess I don't really have a say. Great... everything this man does is great.

No one tells a morality tale better than "Blondie". My personal favorite of his is Million Dollar Baby. The film taps in some pretty deep emotions but without being sentimental and forceful. Eastwood's character had an incredibly difficult decision to make and it was eating him alive. I was completely drawn in, especially during the latter half.

Definitely, though, no Eastwood list is complete without some of his signature westerns.

Excellent list. I gotta admit, I was skeptical on anything Eastwood after seeing Blood Work, I hated that movie. Ended up giving Mystic River a shot and loved it. Resisted seeing Million Dollar Baby because of my dislike for Hilary Swank but after all the recognition it got I had to see it, loved it. Now I am a loyal Eastwood fan. One flop on his extensive resume is bound to happen I suppose.

Great list, but I liked Unforgiven better than Josey Wales. While I may not agree on the order of the rankings, as a standalone list this is a good line-up.

Excellent list! I just wrote a Top 10 Eastwood-directed films article myself (http://www.examiner.com/x-956-Atlanta-Movie-Examiner), and the lists were pretty close -- I think there were three different picks.

My biggest beef is with the omission of "A Perfect World," which I consider a masterpiece and Eastwood's second-best film as a director (behind "Unforgiven"). But admittedly, that's an idiosyncratic selection, so I certainly understand it being left off.

A lot of film fans wound probably rank "Bird" in Eastwood's Top 5 ... but again, this just speaks to how his rich his filmography is, because it's tough to quarrel with any of the picks here.

Nicely done.
