Gordon Franklin Terry Sr writes: on Nov 13 2009 06:07 AM Its a HUGE leap to go from "exploitation" disaster movies (and STARGATE and GODZILA) to do a film about Shakespeare whose writings are extremely prismatic and thoughtful. Enroll in a few SHAKESPEARE classes at your local university before you start. I mean, a pear tree cannot produce apples a four cylinder engine designed for a Chevy Nova cannot work in a giant humvee. also, the apple does not fall far from the tree. A maker of quasi-insipid "disaster-epics" will only make a pseudo-insightful SHAKESPEARE movie . . . . . . UNLESS the maker of "silly, boy-movies" STUDIES Shakespeare and discusses Shakespeare with University instructors. I was telling some girl about 1990 THE BRONX WARRIORS with flame-throwers, motorcycles, helicopter, and police-horses and she said, "that's a 'boy-movie'" (Reply to this) |

De4ective Detectiv3 writes: on Nov 13 2009 06:33 AM Actually, I sort of feel bad for Emmerich, now that he has destroyed every major landmark the world has ever known, where else is there for his career to go? Something tells me he's gonna wind up on celebrity boxing w/ Wolfgang Peterson in the near future. These two guys basically created a new genre in film - disaster porn. (Reply to this) |

John N. writes: on Nov 13 2009 06:49 AM In reply to this comment (#2560956) Yeah, except for Petersen actually directed some, you know, good films (Das Boot, Neverending Story, In the Line of Fire, Outbreak, and hell I even really liked Troy and enjoyed Perfect Storm). Haven't seen Poseidon, but aside from that I wouldn't call any of Petersen's films "disaster porn". The Perfect Storm would be pretty lame without CGI water effects. (Reply to this) |

Dave J. writes: on Nov 13 2009 12:14 PM This movie is going to do exceptionally well since Emmerich's record of catastrophy movies all been a killer at the boxoffice. Looks like he's going to stick to that genre until people will stop and say they had enough. (Reply to this) |

BLaCKWoLF2009 writes: on Nov 13 2009 02:46 PM In reply to this comment (#2560956) Wolfgang Petersen has directed some quality movies. In the Line of Fire - Malkovich vs Eastwoood, it often doesnt get any better than that. In more recent times anyway. Couldnt have said it any better Dave J. 2012 will do well, you never know there may be a sequel (or just the tv series). Emmerich's movies are almost never boring (except for 10000 BC IMO) so it should be pretty entertaining. Will finally be seeing the movie today to see what all of the crazy hype has been about!
