When the ship crashes into the sea upon its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, the small, reptilian creature escapes, growing to an enormous size, eventually terrorizing the city of Rome. The always beautiful and impressive creature animations of the great Ray Harryhausen elevate the film above the level of ordinary 1950's monster sci-fi. The Ymir is one of the best-known creations in his long, distinguished career. [More]

Reviews for 20 Million Miles to Earth
Ah, the 'Fifties - even its movie monsters were indeed kindler and gentler than our own era's . . .
As in the best of Harryhausen's creations, the creature from outer space has an endearing personality that comes through its skittish movements and uncomprehending face.
Ymir, again, is a marvelous creation with stop-motion animation and really shows off just how damn talented Harryhausen actually was. It is too bad that the film isn't nearly as good as the special effects.
Sony Pictures has released an extremely well endowed two-disc DVD set to mark the 50th anniversary of 20 Million Miles to Earth.
This 2007 two-disc DVD edition's ... restored and enhanced original version makes a worthwhile upgrade if you already own the flat-screen 'Ray Harryhausen Signature Collection' DVD that's still in print from 2002.
The diseased astronaut dies and strangely no one is concerned about plagues or quarantines.
