Jackie Earle Haley, More Confirmed for Watchmen Cast

Rorschach, Oxymandias, Night Owl and Silk Spectre set.

Expect to see a whole lot of Watchmen updates over the next several months. And here's one: Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, and Malin Akerman have signed deals to appear in Zack Snyder's Alan Moore adaptation.

(Obviously you don't need me reminding you that Snyder gave us the kick-ass Dawn of the Dead remake -- as well as that mega-wild 300 flick.)

Haley, who made a big impact (years ago) with The Bad News Bears and Breaking Away, and made a huge comeback last year with Little Children and All the King's Men, has been cast as "Rorschach." Latino Review also seems absolutely positive that the lovely Malin Akerman has been locked to play a character called Silk Spectre. (And also that Billy Crudup will be playing Dr. Manhattan.)

Although best known (so far) for her work in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Ms. Akerman has a whole bunch of high-profile projects on the way. Including this one.

Also, IESB.net informs us that Matthew Goode (as "Oxymandias") and Patrick Wilson (as "Night Owl") have been confirmed by their sources. Whew.

As all our source point out, we can probably expect a lot of the Watchmen casting to be shared / confirmed at this week's mega-geek-tastic Comic Con event. Looking forward to it.

This is pretty much as bad as Invisible Woman filled in by Jessica Alba, but probably much worse. Some actress from "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle"? That makes me very, very wary.

Hopefully the casting doesn't take anymore hits.

Sorry buddy but Malin Ackerman is actually Swedish. Just because the story came from the Latino Review doesn't mean that she is of that background. . .anyways why would you think "Ackerman" was a Latino name??

And so what IF the Silk Spectre was played by a latina actress? What would be the big deal? Her race is not essential to her character. And yes I have read the comic, so don't even start.

well regardless of race, some good lookin' girl that is too young for the role is not a good start.

The casting is important, and can cause big problems for a film. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane?: awful ! James Franco as Harry Osburne?: god awful ! These two almost ruin all the Spider-man films for me. Not only are they poor representations of the comic characters but they are poor actors as well. Like Jessica Alba and the moron that plays Dr. Doom (least threatening villain in a comic film so far,) also fall into this category.

I looked at the guy for Rorschac at least looks kinda creepy. Patrick Wilson seems ok, we'll see about the rest...

maybe he is Ozymandias' brother?

anyways, maybe im wrong, but ackerman doesnt seem like a good fit for the role, or the cast. she seems to be just a pretty face. although you never know, she might have some talent.

rest of the cast seems fine. crudup as manhattan is i think potentially mindblowing. anyone who has seen hard candy or little children knows wilson can act ( and they can age him and make him chubbier, no biggie), haley as Rorschach, even if he isnt redheaded, is a perfect fit for creepiness and ugliness, and goode is a surprisingly inspiried choice as Oz, once they dye his hair blonde. if you've seen match point you could see how he can play the arrogant and brilliant Ozymandias well.

overall, they havent gotten any meganames, but they've quietly assembled a legit acting crew that has been performing at a high level in roles just outside the mainstream. and i think that will help, because it will allow the actors to just blend into the role. when i saw brad pitt in troy, all i could think about was how brad pitt was on screen. but when i saw gerard butler onscreen, even though he had had some smaller roles in other movies like reign of fire, i saw leonidas, not gerard butler.

anyways, they need to cast the comedian, and i hope they go with ian mcshane of deadwood.

Actually, Silk Spectre's race and ethnicity ARE important. If you read the book, you didn't read it very well.

Silk Spectre's real name is Laurie Juspeczyk.
Her mother, Sally Juspeczyk, had changed her name to Sally Jupiter to hide her Polish background during WWII. Something Laurie greatly resented. When Laurie took over the mantel of Silk Spectre, she changed her name back to Juspeczyk. So a latina actress would not suit part.

His voice is important, but we should (if they follow the book) be seeing quite a bit of him w/o his mask as well. The scene where the cops get him and take his mask off, and he's screaming "give me back my face!!!" is one of the most powerful scenes in the story, imo.
