Certainly the best first film ever by a musician crossing over to the acting world.

Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend, Future (Mekhi Phifer), is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as the troubled youngster who is still trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world. [More]

Reviews for 8 Mile
A movie that will capture the attention of anyone who remembers what it was like when music was a crucial component of their daily existence.
So paper thin that the former 'king of controversy' was able to cram the entire plot into one little crossover rap song that's currently playing at a radio station near you.
A by-the-numbers storyline, complete with character actions that don't make a lick of sense because of how underdeveloped they are.
The payoff comes after an hour and a half of a long, criminally tiresome setup.
Eminem steals the picture from a cast with snap down to the smallest parts.
Eminem, much to the dismay of his detractors, turns in a rather fine performance in 8 Mile, a flawed film that still manages to make a powerful point.
Both in film and music, he tantalizes us with autobiographical detail while dazzling us with wit, grit, insight, profane humor and mind-boggling wordplay.
The triumph here is that Hanson and screenwriter Scott Silver have found a fresh way to tell this story.
Unfortunately, 8 Mile does waste a lot of time dawdling over just about everything else ... until it finally begins to sputter at about the 6 mile mark.
Pop-music biopics have a great history, but 8 Mile is for Eminem fans only.
