The film stars Nicolas Cage as both Charlie Kaufman himself and his fictionalized identical twin brother, Donald Kaufman. While the boisterous Donald freeloads off of his sibling and works on a serial-killer movie script, Charlie is tormented by both his own army of neuroses and his new project, adapting THE ORCHID THIEF by Susan Orlean into a screenplay. As Charlie struggles to shape the nonfiction novel into a film, he begins writing himself into the story of Orlean (Meryl Streep), a sad-eyed journalist, and her subject, renegade Florida flower expert John Laroche (Chris Cooper). The resulting tale extends far beyond the scope of the book, stretching from Hollywood to New York to...Hollywood four billion years ago. Equally as inventive as BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, ADAPTATION revels in its gloriously absurd premise. Kaufman and Jonze skillfully sidestep the pitfalls of such a seemingly self-indulgent project, creating a multilayered film that focuses on the writing process as well as the nature of beauty, the beauty of nature, and dozens of other significant themes. Cage makes a stunning return to pre-Bruckheimer form in the roles of the Kaufman brothers, giving their identical appearances completely different personalities and making them believable to boot. Meanwhile, the consistently excellent Streep and the often underrated Cooper are perfectly matched as Orlean and Laroche. Even the less central roles are played by great actors--Brian Cox, Tilda Swinton, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Ron Livingston appear as supporting characters. Careening wildly between the hilarious, the ridiculous, and the poignant, Kaufman and Jonze's ADAPTATION is another fine example of their bravura yet sincere style of cinema. [More]

The final product is intriguing enough and brilliant at spots but about as sporadic as a wonderful novel missing pages. It’s a prime example of creativity taking a film so far before the cruel reality of cinematic normalcy sets in.

The author of 'Being John Malkovich' takes us on a manic journey through the hazards of being true to yourself while being successful. Streep, Cage and Cooper are terrific.

...Truly a wonder, a pile of self-contradictions, a series of wrongs that somehow make a right.

So, in a nutshell: it wants to be profound. It isn't.

A subversive little film that says as much about the audience that's watching it as it does anything else.

I have a feeling that as I see this picture a few more times - which I absolutely will - it is going to take its place among my favorite films of all time.

An intelligent pic for those who are impressed that the filmmaker didn't dumb the odd story down until the last 20 minutes.

Try as you might to scrutinize the ethics of Kaufman's approach, somehow it all comes together to create a very compelling, sensitive, intelligent and almost cohesive piece of film entertainment.

Charlie Kaufman has in one stroke made his the most recognizable screenwriter's name in the country. This is the kind of film that viewers can discuss for hours.

Few recent movies have conveyed so forcefully how people can feel shut out by their own lack of passion, how they yearn to end the emptiness.

Part of me wants to acknowledge that Kaufman’s script is inherently lazy, but then I think... it’s more or less the work of a genius.

Leaps from one storyline to another chaotically, is constantly (but intelligently and for a purpose) self-referential, and there’s a whole lot more going on than the laughs.
