From his USO tour in Iraq, to the studios of liberal radio network Air America and on the campaign trail, filmmakers Nick Doob and Chris Hegedus are granted entre to one of the most effective political satirists of our time. Franken fearlessly confronts pundits and politicians, blurring the boundaries between political satire and impassioned citizenry. Featuring a host of beltway big mouths including Ann Coulter, Michael Moore, Al Gore, John Kerry, Robert Kennedy Jr., Sean Hannity, William Safire, Karen Hughes and Henry Kissinger, the film is an hilarious look behind the front lines of the media wars during the most contentious election in recent history. But ultimately, the film is a personal drama of transformation, as Al Franken leaves his comedy days behind and moves from his seat in the sidelines to become a contender inside the political ring. --© Pennebaker Hegedus Films [More]

Reviews for Al Franken: God Spoke
... best viewed as an investigation of the phenomenon of ideological celebrity, with Mr. Franken as a willing case study.
This smoothly edited snapshot of a roaring mouse... is an outspoken and pretty damn funny portrait...
Fans of Franken as a comedian and/or as an Air America radio host, will find plenty to enjoy.
...there is enough funny stuff transpiring that even some non-fans will be entertained.
Franken doesn't allow the knee-jerk predictability of his liberal pronouncements to deflate the great gasbag that he becomes as the movie proceeds.
The filmmakers capture Franken's gradual transformation from cool satirist to impassioned activist in what turns out to be a vérité amble through a pivotal year in his life.
Existing in the moment without inquiry or challenge, cinéma vérité fosters exactly the sort of refusal to think beyond the immediate that this film criticizes in right-wing dittoheads.
A humorous, but more importantly illustrative, documentary about the weight of the media -- especially the comedic media -- on the last presidential election.
Offers a portrait of this complex man that is -- dare we say it? -- fair and balanced.
The film is worth seeing for footage of Bill O’Reilly seeking sympathy from Ann Coulter, who makes maternal noises with a mischievous glint in her eye.
A sketchy but often entertaining record of satirist Al Franken's campaign to counteract what he perceives to be a right-wing conspiracy of lies and disinformation.
A better, less passé film about Al Franken's wife Franni forming the backbone of her husband's career lies dormant here, as does the man's rebel spirit.
Franken handles everything with his inimitable sense of humor, which helps his message go down much smoother.
Though not as thorough as War Room, docu is still highly entertaining and poignant, if not too critical or deep, offering a portrait of a new kind of American folk hero, more iconoclastic (not to mention witty and charming) than Michael Moore.
The scope ought to be narrowed, but the film is still pretty entertaining in places, owing to Franken's intelligence and quick wit.
