Consensus: Though perhaps no film could fully do justice to the fascinating life and personality of Muhammad Ali, Mann's direction and Smith's performance combine to pack a solid punch.

Runtime: 2 hrs 45 mins

Genre: Dramas

Michael Mann's ALI manages to be an informative look at the career of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and an entertaining and moving portrait of the man. The action begins with the brash young Cassius Clay's surprising victory over Sonny Liston. The film depicts Clay's conversion to Islam, his partnership with "Bundini" Brown (Jamie Foxx in a wonderfully complex turn), his friendship with Howard Cosell (a transformed Jon Voight), his principled refusal to serve in the military during Vietnam, and his subsequent problems with the law and the boxing commission. The film concludes with Ali's battle with George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle." Will Smith delivers a worthy performance, transforming his body, face, and voice to capture the spirit of the charismatic fighter. The work of the supporting cast is superb, including Smith's real-life wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Marvin Gaye's daughter, Nona Gaye, as the women in Ali's life. Mann brings the viewer in close to the boxing action, effectively depicting Ali's unique grace and quickness, and the violent frenzy of the sport. The film shows the familiar public figure of fights and press conferences, and also gives a glimpse of the quiet, thoughtful private life of Ali. [More]

Like the fighter himself, Ali dazzles with its technique -- this is a big, impressively mounted movie, packed with meticulous, you-are-there details.

Though technically polished… it feels curiously ordinary, a word one never associates with Muhammad Ali.

It's the boxer you enjoy, not the sluggish 15 rounds the filmmakers put him through.

Any feeling of regret that Mann and Roth didn't quite pull it off must be tempered with gratitude and admiration for the fact that they dared make the effort in the first place.

The onetime Fresh Prince surpasses himself in Michael Mann's Ali, physically, vocally and emotionally meeting the challenge of this biopic of the charismatic athlete.

I wondered whether the shouts of “Get off the ropes!” were aimed at Ali or director Michael Mann, whose film spends much of its 167 minutes at risk of getting knocked out.

It's good -- but Ali himself was the greatest. So a reluctant, kind of mild thumbs up for this.

Smith's towering performance can only be fully appreciated on a suitably large screen.

We see a lot of events, and hear a lot of talking, but it never seems to mean anything in terms of who these people are.

'Ali," despite some fine performances and well-staged fight scenes, is a major disappointment.

It's not a TKO per se -- where did this will to power come from, anyway? -- but it is a helluva fight.

For all Smith's dedication and Mann's abilities, Ali remains a figure too big for even the big screen to contain.

Even though the movie is too long and suffers from an inconsistent tone, the narrative is compelling, as are the performances.
