A joltin' powerhouse of a movie that deals more in fleeting impressions than pat answers.

Consensus: Though perhaps no film could fully do justice to the fascinating life and personality of Muhammad Ali, Mann's direction and Smith's performance combine to pack a solid punch.

Michael Mann's ALI manages to be an informative look at the career of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and an entertaining and moving portrait of the man. The action begins with the brash young Cassius Clay's surprising victory over Sonny Liston. The film depicts Clay's conversion to Islam, his partnership with "Bundini" Brown (Jamie Foxx in a wonderfully complex turn), his friendship with Howard Cosell (a transformed Jon Voight), his principled refusal to serve in the military during Vietnam, and his subsequent problems with the law and the boxing commission. The film concludes with Ali's battle with George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle." Will Smith delivers a worthy performance, transforming his body, face, and voice to capture the spirit of the charismatic fighter. The work of the supporting cast is superb, including Smith's real-life wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Marvin Gaye's daughter, Nona Gaye, as the women in Ali's life. Mann brings the viewer in close to the boxing action, effectively depicting Ali's unique grace and quickness, and the violent frenzy of the sport. The film shows the familiar public figure of fights and press conferences, and also gives a glimpse of the quiet, thoughtful private life of Ali. [More]

Reviews for Ali
It lacks much of the flash, fire and humor of Muhammad Ali and is shot more in the tone of a eulogy than a celebration.
The new film shouldn't serve as a history lesson, but it will show young folks (and remind us old-timers) what made him the most famous athlete on the planet.
Smith and Ali are hobbled by Mann's decision merely to skim the surface of Muhammad Ali's larger-than-life life.
Aside from a lack of story and meandering direction, the thing I liked least about Ali was the guerrilla-style cinematography.
Does pack plenty of punches, most notably the mesmerizing turn by Smith.
Filled with vivid cameos and set to an infectious soul beat that effectively covers the underlying hum of calculated precision.
Ali is no disgrace, but it's not much of a performer, especially considering that it is one of the few hyped year-end releases that coulda been a contender.
The film's fight sequences are straightforward ... and effectively convey Ali's agility and lightning speed.
A movie that, at its best, is as brashly eloquent in cinematic expression as Ali was with his fists.
How do you make a dull movie about one of the most interesting people on the planet?
With all due respect to Will Smith, you don't send a Fresh Prince to play a king.
Smith ... demonstrates not only impressive boxing prowess ... but a maturity and subtlety that he's never before shown on screen.
An exhilarating travelogue through 10 of the most turbulent years of American history, with a rivetingly magnetic personality as its focus.
Mann ... makes a valiant attempt. And with the loose-limbed Will Smith in the title role, he gets surprisingly far.
The most impressive and persuasive rendering of a late-20th-century icon since Anthony Hopkins turned on that old Nixon charm in Oliver Stone's 1995 biopic.
Mann's first movie with feeling; his overwhelming love of its subject will turn audiences into exuberant, thrilled fight crowds.
