When legendary Miami Sharks quarterback Cap Rooney (Dennis Quaid) is badly injured in a game, coach Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino) is forced to reach deep into his bench for Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx). The third-stringer's injury-plagued career and difficulty with maintaining focus make him a dubious commodity at best. But Beamen, aware of what this opportunity could mean, starts playing at a much higher level than ever before, planting championship hopes in the minds of Miami fans. The extraordinary success of Beamen, an athlete whose flamboyance contradicts everything the Lombardi-like D'Amato believes about the game, makes the coach wonder whether his time is passing. To add to his problems, Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz), a young woman who has inherited ownership of the team from her late father, is pressuring him to win now, and at any cost. Will D'Amato be able to pull the team together for a final run at the championship? The film conveys a vivid sense of the atmosphere of pro football and features a finely modulated performance by Pacino. [More]

Reviews for Any Given Sunday
It's super revved up, high-intensity tedium all right, but tedium nonetheless.
Stone never simply make a point when he can make it 50 times with a hammer to the forehead.
An Oliver Stone football film--a fact that gives one an idea of how testosterone-happy this gridiron saga is.
One of the few football movies that really puts you in the action, conveying the ferocity and trauma of the game.
An exhilarating, chaotic film that manages to be both admiring and critical of the game that keeps fans glued to the TV every weekend.
Raucous, violent, in-your-face and occasionally advancing like a punch to the belly.
Watching this film, you get an overwhelming sense of exactly what it's like to be staring up at 6-foot-6, 300 lb. linebacker (for emphasis Stone sneaks a few tiger growls into the audio) while 80,000 people roar in the stands.
We're reminded that very little movie material is original until actors transform it from cliches into particulars.
This is a hardcore football flick, not some mushy tale with football as a backdrop.
As it lumbers past the two-and-a-half hour mark, you may well find yourself praying for sudden death.
This COULD have been that one awesome pro football movie we've been waiting for.
The brutal game sequences, combined with a thumping soundtrack you feel in your stomach, should make his target audience drool.
