None of this adds up to much of a movie; it's more like a filmed hodgepodge of not-fully- thought-out ideas and one-liners and small shards of jaundiced polemic.

Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci star as a mismatched couple in Woody Allen's funny and well-made romantic comedy ANYTHING ELSE. Biggs plays Jerry Falk, a young comedy writer looking to make it big, while Ricci is Amanda, a self-absorbed free spirit whom men go wild for. They fall for each other instantly near the beginning of the film, then spend the rest of the movie trying to work out their very complex and complicated relationship, especially after her mother (Stockard Channing) moves in to their small apartment to live with them. With echoes of such classic Allen fare as ANNIE HALL, ANYTHING ELSE is a lighthearted look at young love in the Big Apple. Allen himself stars as David Dobel, an older comedy writer who mentors Jerry, often on walks through Central Park, but it seems that Dobel has a bit of an anger management problem. Once again, New York City is virtually a character unto itself, as Allen includes scenes in such Gotham places as the Village Vanguard jazz club, Isabella's restaurant, Roosevelt Island, Sheepshead Bay, and the Quad Cinema. Good supporting work is turned in by Danny DeVito as Falk's manager. The soundtrack includes songs by Billie Holiday, Ravi Shankar, Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, Moby, and Diana Krall, who appears in the film. [More]

Reviews for Anything Else
Curiously, Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci come out better than I imagined after being compelled to play out the movie's sadomasochistic tag line.
Filled with the sort of sharp, dirty laughs and biting observations on life, love and sex for which the director, in his youth, was once fearlessly known.
Unlike the wan doodles Woody's been cranking out for the past few years, this dark, often hilarious cacophony boasts a mile-wide ugly streak I found immensely satisfying.
The whole movie feels like a warm-up, a dusting off of cobwebs, like Woody Allen has just woken from a long nap and is finally ready to get back to work.
Displaying what is both good and bad about Allen, Anything Else has enough laugh out loud moments to make it worthwhile.
Far more vital than Allen's last few pictures, Anything Else should serve as lifesaving tourniquet; It's no cure for wounded fans but it'll stop the bleeding.
Ricci is perfectly cast, and seems to relish her character's blend of cruelty and cluelessness.
Anything Else dangerously embraces the vibes of mediocrity and that’s a crying shame for an artist so capably adventurous as Allen once was in his heyday of potent hilarity.
Woody Allen's Anything Else is what his Annie Hall would have been if he had cast less-talented actors in it and dragged it out for an extra 15 minutes.
Easily the most enjoyable Allen flick since Everyone Says I Love You, and on a par with his 1970s and early 1980s work.
While no one will mistake Anything Else as being worthy of comparison to Allen’s best work, it’s refreshing to see the bespectacled genius lay his cards out on the table once again.
Like many recent Woody Allen movies, this one is all about the dialogue and one-liners
