Consensus: The additional footage slows down the movie somewhat (some say the new cut is inferior to the original), but Apocalypse Now Redux is still a great piece of cinema.

Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic, loosely based on HEART OF DARKNESS by Joseph Conrad, tells the story of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a special agent sent into Cambodia to assassinate an errant American colonel (Marlon Brando). Willard is assigned to a navy patrol boat operated by Chief (Albert Hall) and three hapless soldiers (Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, and Larry Fishburne). They are escorted on part of their journey by an air cavalry unit led by Lt. Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), a gung-ho commander with a love of Wagner, surfing, and napalm. After witnessing a surreal USO show featuring Playboy playmates, and an anarchic battle with the Viet Cong, Willard reaches Colonel Kurtz's compound. A crazed photo journalist and Kurtz groupie (Dennis Hopper) welcomes the crew, and Willard begins to question his orders to "terminate the colonel's command." Considered to be one of the best war movies of all time, APOCALYPSE NOW features incredible performances and beautifully chaotic visuals that make it a powerful, unforgettable work. Released in August 2001, APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX, a restored and updated version of the 1979 film, includes 49 minutes of never-before-seen footage, a Technicolor enhancement, and a six-channel soundtrack. Reviews for Apocalypse Now Redux
An extraordinary film experience that finally takes its rightful place among the greats.
As fabulously, boldly impressionistic and intelligent as it was when it was released, in shorter form, 22 years ago.
It is now a richer, fuller film, if still something short of the longed-for masterpiece.
Longer or shorter, redux or not, Apocalypse Now is one of the central events of my life as a filmgoer.
Taken as a whole, the new scenes serve to reprise that old question: 'Why are we in Vietnam?'
A restoration that transforms a flawed movie, one that was touched by greatness, into a masterpiece.
There is more narrative clarity, and almost every character gains definition and humanity.
The film now seems both mellowed and -- thanks in part to the most vibrant-looking prints in its 22-year history -- revitalized.
Coming back decades later to it, Coppola has been able to reshape these extraordinary scenes with a wisdom and humility perhaps missing before.
Apocalypse Now is a frenzied, free-based ode to the grieving soldier and his need-to-numb.
In some ways even richer and more atmospheric than the original version, in others attenuated and logy.
You won't see any film this year as beautiful, and plain thrilling as Apocalypse Now Redux.
Apocalypse Now Redux is the meandering, indulgent art project that he was still enough of a craftsman, in 1979, to avoid.
Where Apocalypse Now once strained for greatness without quite reaching it, this new version of the film, assembled by Coppola and his longtime editor, Walter Murch, has greatness firmly within its grasp.
Although its magnificently restored print and marvelously revamped soundtrack are reason enough to catch it in the theater, one can't help but feel that the new scenes detract from the film's epic tale.
