Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his fellow villagers lead a peaceful life in the forest until a savage, unprovoked attack turns their world upside down. After hiding his pregnant wife and young son from the invaders, Jaguar Paw joins in the fight, only to be taken prisoner with the rest of the survivors. Uncertain of what the future holds and taken from his home to a thriving metropolis that might as well be a foreign country, Jaguar Paw has just one goal--to return to his wife and child. Jaguar Paw's journey is a coming-of-age saga running the gamut of love, loss, courage, and redemption. Filmed in Mexico with a cast of indigenous Americans speaking in the Yucatec dialect, this is a tale filled with contrasts. Muted greens and browns define the forest village while the city is awash in bright colors. The wealthy live in opulence, sporting elaborate jewelry, clothing, and hairdos while the villagers wear twig and bone ornaments. The villagers respect both life and nature, but the rulers of the great stone city condone violence in an effort to appease their gods. Gibson's point is clear: the more "advanced" society is corrupt and unrepentant, while the more primitive Mayans have far greater faith and humanity. Gibson also drives home the recurring theme of rebirth with symbolism, including rain, pregnancy, and the arrival of Christianity. Beautifully filmed by Dean Semler and scored by James Horner, APOCALYPTO could benefit from some framing at its beginning to give the viewer a sense of time and place, but otherwise offers a rare glimpse into a lost world. ... the storytelling is simplistic and tells us little about the culture of the Mayans.

As good as it is, the film is nevertheless tempered by an overwhelming streak of sadism.

Apocalypto may not be one of the best movies of the year, but it surely stands shoulder to shoulder with those exceptional efforts of 2006 -- at least from an artistic perspective.

The premise of Cornel Wilde's 'The Naked Prey,' the jungle savagery of a 1980s Italian cannibal film and the sadomasochistic martyr-complex obsessions that apparently churn like a ball of snakes inside Mel Gibson's head are all here...

Brilliant. A masterpiece. The best film of the year and I should know. I’ve seen them all.

A work of searing, go-for-broke intensity... these relentless, lunatic ravings feel like what would happen if Werner Herzog directed Rambo IV. Mel Gibson might be a cretinous, bigoted drunkard, but he's a fascinating filmmaker.

Of all the American directors now working -- including the guys who make the Saw movies -- Mel Gibson may have the most pathological fixation on human suffering.

It's disturbing that we get so much violence on TV and in the real news, that a filmmaker would make a conscious effort to create more of it. This is one of the most sadistic and violent movies I have ever seen.

Gibson isn't interested in educating either us or himself ... [and] the switch to pure action allows him to indulge in his by-now predictable sadism.

Offers non-stop excitement and we MEAN non-stop, an electrifying epic in every sense of the word.

What most disappoints about Apocalypto is that it is, ironically, not particularly risible in any way.

Hmmm, a man's struggle for freedom wrapped around a love story, sounds like Mel Gibson wanted to make Braveheart again, only with more violence and less clothes.

In spite of its high production values and higher pretensions, This is really just a gory matinee actionfest. Director Gibson needs a better writer than writer Gibson.

In this family-values action film, you could never accuse Gibson of being unconvincing where blood and sadism are concerned.

Rather than sprawling into far-reaching epic mode, this carefully contained script zooms in on one man's drive to protect his family against the backdrop of a civilization on the point of collapse.
