Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his fellow villagers lead a peaceful life in the forest until a savage, unprovoked attack turns their world upside down. After hiding his pregnant wife and young son from the invaders, Jaguar Paw joins in the fight, only to be taken prisoner with the rest of the survivors. Uncertain of what the future holds and taken from his home to a thriving metropolis that might as well be a foreign country, Jaguar Paw has just one goal--to return to his wife and child. Jaguar Paw's journey is a coming-of-age saga running the gamut of love, loss, courage, and redemption. Filmed in Mexico with a cast of indigenous Americans speaking in the Yucatec dialect, this is a tale filled with contrasts. Muted greens and browns define the forest village while the city is awash in bright colors. The wealthy live in opulence, sporting elaborate jewelry, clothing, and hairdos while the villagers wear twig and bone ornaments. The villagers respect both life and nature, but the rulers of the great stone city condone violence in an effort to appease their gods. Gibson's point is clear: the more "advanced" society is corrupt and unrepentant, while the more primitive Mayans have far greater faith and humanity. Gibson also drives home the recurring theme of rebirth with symbolism, including rain, pregnancy, and the arrival of Christianity. Beautifully filmed by Dean Semler and scored by James Horner, APOCALYPTO could benefit from some framing at its beginning to give the viewer a sense of time and place, but otherwise offers a rare glimpse into a lost world. A true vision in every sense of the word, realized as a stunning ballet of unforgettable visuals and unrelenting violence.

It is a measure of Gibson's talent and perseverance, as well as his respect for old-fashioned storytelling, that it succeeds as well as it does.

Apocalypto is an exploitative, over-the-top, and nauseatingly pointless display of bloodshed devoid of any real story.

Whether or not you still hate Mel Gibson for his drunken Anti-Semitic tirade, Apocalypto is a rousing experience and a spectacular ride.

Think and say what you will about the beliefs and actions of Mel Gibson. One conclusion, however, is undeniable: He's a powerfully effective filmmaker.

Never let it be said that Gibson the director (he also co-wrote the script with former assistant Farhad Safinia) doesn't know how to pace and build action like a pro.

Gibson sticks his audience in a time machine and uses it to show to them a half-naked Indian running through the jungle very fast.

Director (and co-writer) Mel Gibson has really outdone himself with Apocalypto. Although it may not have the same resonance as Braveheart, it's better than The Passion of the Christ (which I thought was excellent) and is a definite big-screen must-see.

Gibson is a primitive all right, but so were Cecil B. DeMille and D.W. Griffith, and somehow we survived their idiocies. Doubtless there will come a day when he joins them in the Valhalla of the vacuous.

Apocalypto is unburdened by nationalist or religious piety -- it's pure, amoral sensationalism.

The blood and gore become so extreme that they provoke titters of ridicule, undermining a simple, stirring story of family devotion as a man races from vile captors to return home and rescue his pregnant wife and their son.

An astonishingly vivid and violent film about the waning days of a Mayan civilization that turns into a meditation on the shadow side of life, forcing us to own up to human savagery and to realize how desperately we need peace as a counter-balance.

A web of death-drives, false devotions, lofty pretenses, auto-plagiarisms, sound but inarticulate craftsmanship, and lowest-common-denominator provisions of trauma as entertainment.

The harder Apocalypto works to shock and excite you, the less shocked and excited you become, until you may find yourself beset by the urge to giggle.
